- Runtime

- Description
- In recent years, North Minneapolis has been known as a “food desert,” which the Center for Disease Control describes as an area lacking in access to fresh, healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Even more recently, North Minneapolis has been referred to as a “food swamp,” a less formal term that accounts for the wealth of unhealthy food options – such as fast and fried foods – that are widely available on Broadway Avenue, which is also home to Appetite for Change.
A social enterprise with a mission to build “wealth, health and social change” in North Minneapolis, Appetite for Change operates a Breaking Bread Café and several community gardens, provides cooking classes for community members, and trains and employs more than 180 staff – including youth. Breaking Bread Café is a stanchion on Broadway, and it teems with energy, ideas and – of course – delicious, fresh, healthy foods.

- Laura Johnson had always envisioned raising her own family in her hometown of Duluth, Minn. After all, the northern city on the shores of Lake Superior provided a backdrop for many warm and nurturing years growing up. The youngest of three children, she was only occasionally reminded that she had been adopted as an infant from a world away, in Korea.
The uncomfortable moments happened when her parents and two older brothers, all of whom are white, were absent. She soon realized those experiences would not be shared.
Our One Greater Minnesota reporter, Kaomi Lee met with Korean adoptees in northern Minnesota.

- Fearing the spread of communism deeper into Southeast Asia, the US Government held fast to the belief that, if Laos fell into the hands of the National Liberation Front (also known as the Viet Cong), then other nearby nations would also tumble like dominoes. So the CIA established a secret operation in the country, recruiting, training and supporting Hmong people to act as “surrogate soldiers of the American armed forces.” And that operation – known as a “secret” or “quiet” war – unfolded in the shadows of the Vietnam War, remaining classified until the 1990s.

- According to providers who are on the front lines of administering mental health care, farmers are among the highest number of suicides nationally. But they’re also among the last to seek help, say community health professionals. State lawmakers have been working to make more resources available, but have not yet been able to pass a bill to address these concerns. The issue of mental health in farming communities has also gotten the attention of Gov. Tim Walz, who recently held a roundtable to discuss the crisis.
Meanwhile, an increasing number of farmers are getting out of the dairy business – a particularly hard-hit industry right now – or leaving farming altogether. But hatching a plan for life after farming also contributes to the stress that those who work in the industry already feel.

- Breweries Bring New Life to Greater Minnesota
- Runtime
- 5:31
- Date posted
- Description
- Minnesota ranks thirteenth in the nation in craft breweries per capita. Its breweries bring in more than $2 billion dollars in economic impact each year. All of that is perhaps more incredible, given that the number of breweries has more than tripled since 2011. That’s when state lawmakers signed legislation, dubbed the “Surly” bill, to allow breweries to open taprooms, where they could sell pints of the beer they make onsite.
Today, craft brewers say there are about 170 breweries across the state. Lauren Bennett McGinty, executive director of the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild, said that the greatest opportunities for opening a new brewery exist outside the metro.

At the Hennepin History Museum, staff and an army of volunteers have undertaken the task of creating a detailed inventory of every single object in its collection. As they open old boxes, they’re finding more than old pay stubs and tax returns, such as this child’s doll dressed in a Ku Klux Klan robe.
