- New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio spent 15 years representing the Camden area in Congress. Arguably, Florio’s crowning achievement in Washington was writing and then pushing through the Superfund Law. The measure created a federal program that is dedicated to cleaning up some of the nation’s most hazardous pollution, with the proviso that the polluter should pay. The former New Jersey Governor died on September 25, 2022, at age 85. In this bonus episode, “Hazard NJ” reflects on Florio’s efforts to clean up dangerous pollution by revisiting an interview recorded with him earlier in 2022.

- The Superfund program for environmental alleviation was designed to be paid for by a tax on chemical and oil companies. But this tax expired years ago, leaving the program strapped for cash. All this has changed in recent months. Last fall, the chemical tax was brought back as part of the massive federal infrastructure bill. The oil tax has returned as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed today by President Joe Biden.
NJ Spotlight News anchor Briana Vannozzi spoke with Rep. Frank Pallone about the restoration of the special tax, and why it matters.

- The mud lining the Hackensack River is a mysterious mixture known to contain mercury, cadmium, lead, PCBs and other nasty substances. Now the river is on its way to becoming New Jersey’s 115th Superfund site — and that’s not a bad thing.
In 2012, when Superstorm Sandy slammed into the Hackensack and the surrounding Meadowlands, towns were flooded and widespread damage occurred. But the area’s wetlands are believed to have softened the storm’s local impact. As climate change brings more frequent and more intense storms, cleanup efforts and restoration work in the area are becoming more urgent.

- Description
- In July 2005, Roger De Groat stepped outside his home in the secluded, forested community of Upper Ringwood to find a hole the size of a swimming pool where his backyard used to be. For many years, sinkholes have been a hazard in Roger’s neighborhood, which is situated atop an extensive system of abandoned iron mines.
What is inside the mines poses a different kind of lingering threat.
In the 1960s and 70s the Ford Motor Company turned Ringwood’s mines into a toxic waste dump. An overwhelming majority of the community’s residents are Native Americans of the Ramapough Lenape Nation. Today the community is gripped by cancer and other diseases that residents believe are tied to the Ford chemical dump.
When the EPA put the Ringwood Mines on the Superfund list, a shoddy cleanup left so much pollution behind that the site had to be relisted. A second try at cleaning up the mess is now underway. As climate change brings increasingly heavy rains to ...

- The chemical company Diamond Alkali, one of the nation’s main producers of Agent Orange, spent years dumping chemical waste in the Passaic River and polluting Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood. High levels of dioxin, a dangerous byproduct of the company’s work, were discovered there in the 1980s, causing concern among residents for the safety of their homes and yards.
State and federal authorities pledged to clean up the mess. But today, nearly 40 years later, toxic mud still lies beneath the water — a 17-mile-long stretch of river that U.S. Sen. Cory Booker has called “America’s biggest crime scene.” The cleanup now carries a $1.8 billion price tag, an uncertain timeline, and a growing threat that intense storms — fueled by climate change — will further spread polluted matter into the groundwater and throughout the neighborhood.

- While growing up in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Peggy Fussell enjoyed ice skating on a local pond. She has since learned that the pond was a toxic waste site.
Decades after chemical producer American Cyanamid ceased its Bridgewater operations, the plant location was declared a Superfund Site. Its toxic legacy is precariously contained in local waste ponds. As climate change fuels more intense storms in the region, these ponds are at risk of flooding and spilling over into the nearby community.
This cleanup has dragged on for decades, with no clear end in sight. What will it take to avoid catastrophe?

- Description
- While science is traditionally practiced objectively, C. Brandon Ogbunu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University, performs his research taking inspiration from his autobiography. His research questions are often mined from his own experiences, starting with his interaction with police in college, which informed his thesis titled “The Liberation of RNA.” A New York City native, Ogbunu grew up with all the “trappings” of being economically disadvantaged which, to some, would make his success in science exceptional. But he credits his curious, strong and independent mother, who protected him from what was going on around him – HIV/AIDS and the crack epidemic – to encourage his inquisitiveness and inspire his scientific mind. His writing appears in academic journals and for Wired, The Atlantic and ESPN focusing on topics related to the intersection of science with justice and culture.
