People who seek out drugs on the street are often unaware that they could be consuming fentanyl, which can be up to 100 times more potent than morphine. In this documentary report by special correspondent Simon Ostrovsky, addiction to opioids and the potential for overdose is examined on the streets, in overdose prevention centers and in law enforcement offices of New York and New Jersey.
Hear from people addicted to opioids as well as from advocacy groups, health officials and authorities about what they are doing in response to the deadly fentanyl crisis.

That takes courage, says Nate Bellinger, the plaintiffs’ attorney at Our Children’s Trust. “To walk into court, take the stand while the lawyers for your state are looking at you, preparing to cross-examine you, and tell your story before a packed courtroom, that is something most adults will never do, let alone teenagers.
In the summer of 2023, the 16 plaintiffs, all under the age of 22, won a surprising and significant victory in state court. They argued that Montana’s prioritizing of fossil fuels extraction violated their rights, through fossil fuels’ impact on climate change. Montana has a significant coal industry; but it also has a unique state constitution that enshrines a right to “a clean and healthful environment.”

- Public trust in the government is near historic lows, according to the Pew Research Center.
Today, 35% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say they trust the federal government just about always or most of the time, compared with 11% of Republicans and Republican-leaning survey respondents.
It wasn’t always like this. In the 1950s, trust in government was high, with about 75% of Americans saying they trusted the government to do the right thing. That trust began to decline sharply during the Vietnam war in the 1960, and continued to worsen through the Watergate scandal and the Pentagon papers in the 1970s.
Throughout the years, trust is always rated higher among the party with a candidate in office. Today, trust is slightly higher in Democrats than it was a year ago.
