- Thousands packed a sprawling lawn just outside First Baptist Church of Cottondale on Tuesday night. They came to ask why and to say goodbye.
They lit candles and wept and prayed. Again and again, they said her name: Athena Strand.
Seven-year-old Athena disappeared from her home last Wednesday in Wise County, about 30 miles northwest of Fort Worth. An Amber Alert was issued the following day.
Her body was found on Friday, just a few miles from her home; her cause of death has not been released, but Sheriff Lane Akin said officials believe she died shortly after she was taken.
Authorities arrested 31-year-old Tanner Lynn Horner, a FedEx driver from Fort Worth, on charges of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. It is unclear whether he has an attorney.

OurCalling hopes to create relationships with those coming through the doors for the first time for the meal, as well as grow those with friends who have attended before.
OurCalling is a day service outreach center located in Dallas near downtown. The organization is always looking for volunteers who are interested in helping homeless individuals, as well as accepting donations, Johnson said. More information can be found at OurCalling.org.

- The old U.S. Army dog tag is rusted and dinged in spots, its edges jagged with age.
But the name inscribed on it is still clear: Walter E. Simpson.
On Friday, Veterans Day, the tag was returned to Simpson’s family, more than 60 years after it went missing, at a small ceremony in the family’s hometown of Grand Prairie.
“We feel like we have a small part of him back,” said Simpson’s brother, Lewis Hutchinson of Dallas.
Simpson, who grew up in Grand Prairie, died in June of last year at 84.

- To help cool down neighborhoods at night, the city of Phoenix, Arizona is testing out a “cool pavement” product that acts like sunscreen for roads.
The product, called CoolSeal, is not paint. Instead, it bonds to the existing asphalt when applied, so the roads are still recyclable.
The idea of CoolSeal is to make the asphalt more reflective. That way, the asphalt absorbs less heat from the sun during the day, and less of that heat is released back into the air at night.
The city applies the product from around March to October. It’s currently on streets in 18 Phoenix neighborhoods and a city park, with plans to seal another 11 locations next year.

The footage — which shows a hallway inside Methodist Dallas Medical Center where officers confronted the gunman and also police bodycam as officers apprehended him — documents the moments multiple gunshots rang out inside the hospital’s delivery and labor unit, and people both inside and outside the hospital room pleaded with the gunman to end the deadly stalemate.
