- Description
- This past summer, architectural preservationists, master timber framers, art students, and other volunteers gathered in Sanok, Poland, to help recreate the roof and inner cupola of the Gwozdziec Synagogue. The synagogue, which was built in the 17th and 18th centuries and destroyed during World War II, is considered one of the finest examples of wooden synagogue architecture of its time. Once the synagogue components are built, they will have to be broken down and shipped off to Warsaw, where they will be installed to form the centerpiece of the Museum of the History of Jews, which is set to open in 2013. The reconstruction project is a collaboration of Handshouse Studio and the museum.

- Description
- Coming October 25, 2011
David Ben-Gurion was a mythic figure, a founding father of Israel, and the country's first prime minister, but he was also a real man, brimming with human contradictions, who was observed in all his complexity by Shimon Peres. Peres was a young man when he became a protégé of Ben-Gurion's in the 1940s and he remained closely connected to him until his death in 1973. He combines personal recollection and a deep sense of history, politics, and culture in his biography of David Ben-Gurion. Peres's extraordinary biography, written with David Landau, former editor-in-chief of Haaretz, is not a memoir, but it is inevitably shaped by Peres's time with "the old man," as Ben-Gurion was known by those around him. It offers an intimate look at history -- the creation of the State of Israel, its fateful wars, and the decisions, many of them controversial, that determined its future course. Peres, currently the president of Israel, has thought a great deal about the ...

- Description
- Rodger Kamenetz, acclaimed author of The Jew in the Lotus, has long been engaged in the study and practice of Jewish spirituality. And he has for many years taught a course in Prague on Franz Kafka. The more he learned about the life and work of Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav (great-grandson of the Ba'al Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism), the more aware he became of unexpected connections between the lives and works of Kafka, a secular artist fascinated by Jewish mysticism, and Rabbi Nachman, a religious mystic who reached out to secular Jews. Both men died young of tuberculosis. Both invented new forms of storytelling that explore the search for meaning in an illogical, unjust world. Both gained prominence with the posthumous publication of their writing. And most intriguing of all, both left strict instructions that their unpublished writings were to be burned after they died.
Kamenetz uses these episodes as points of departure on a journey into the spiritual quests of these two tr...
