- Description
- Chef Ari White learned to slow-smoke meat from his father in the backyard of his childhood home in El Paso, Texas. Today, Ari operates a kosher catering company in Yonkers, NY and says he owns the only kosher wood-burning barbecue pit in the country.
Every weekend this summer, Ari is hauling his 18-foot smoking rig to street fairs across the Northeast and serving up pulled brisket, chicken and turkey drumsticks.
Ari shared the secret to his 'cue with Tablet Magazine -- a 12-spice rub that combines sweet, savory and spicy flavors and is guaranteed to enhance just about anything you throw on the grill this Independence Day. And just to prove it, Ari applied the rub to a treat even vegetarians can enjoy.
Ari's pop-up BBQ stand recently came under fire from some in the orthodox world. Attendees at a fundraiser for a Philadelphia-area yeshiva complained that the name of Ari's stand -- "Hakadosh BBQ" -- was an offensive play on "Hakadosh Baruch Hu" -- a...

A random email containing what purports to be news of the Lost Temple of Solomon sends day-dreaming New York-based reporter Matthew Fishbane on a journey halfway around the world—to the Solomon Islands. There, in the remote jungles of Malaita, he encounters self-described Melanesian Israelites with apocalyptic visions, dreamers guarding archaeological ruins of unknown but apparently ancient provenance, and a warlord who rallied an ethnic militia under the Star of David, as well as canny modern politicians who are leveraging the tiny island nation's greatest asset—sovereignty—for development assistance from the modern Jewish state. When the stray rumors that float across our laptop and iPhone screens are followed to their source, reality turns out to be even wilder and more compelling than fiction.

- Description
- Rabbi Kushner has spent years pondering the subject of Job—as a young doctoral student in Bible, rattled by recent revelations of the Holocaust, he contemplated a dissertation on the biblical character, only to find himself deferring the challenge. The book continued to haunt him, as a congregational rabbi counseling the bereaved, and as the father of a child taken young by terminal illness. He has finally returned to the subject with which he had planned to begin his scholarship, and has produced a book that understands the biblical world that produced "Job" as well as the modern world that continues to cry out for answers to life's deepest mysteries. The book explores the biblical answer to the question of why God permits good people to suffer, as understood by people through the centuries and in our post-Holocaust age.

- For generations, David Nahmias' family distilled alcohol from figs and dates in their small village of Taznakht in southern Morocco. They sold their homebrew, called mahia, to Jews and Muslims. A fiercely patriotic man, David's father Joseph secretly transported Moroccan revolutionaries during Morocco's fight for independence in 1956, and was subsequently thrown in jail by the French authorities. Joseph refused to leave Morocco, even after the vast majority of Moroccan Jews joined the diaspora and he was the last Jew standing in Taznakht. It was only at the end of his life, when he was quite ill, that he agreed to join his family in America. After Joseph and his wife passed away two years ago, their son David found a way to keep his parents' legacy and passion for Morocco alive: by producing mahia, their beloved moonshine, in his adopted home of New York. Here's a look inside the Nahmias et Fils distillery. Check out the entire story here: http://www.tabletmag.com/jewish-life-and-relig...

- When Grant Expelled the Jews by Jonathan Sarna

- Description
- Forthcoming from Nextbook Press:
On December 17, 1862, as the Civil War entered its second winter, General Ulysses S. Grant issued a sweeping order, General Orders #11, expelling "Jews as a class" from his war zone. It remains the most notorious anti-Jewish official order in American history.
The order came back to haunt Grant in 1868 when he ran for president. Never before had Jews been so widely noticed in a presidential contest, and never before had they been confronted so publicly with the question of how to balance their "American" and "Jewish" interests.
During his two terms in the White House, the memory of the "obnoxious order" shaped Grant's relationship with the American Jewish community. Surprisingly, he did more for Jews than any other president to his time. How this happened, and why, sheds new light on one of our most enigmatic presidents, on the Jews of his day, and on America itself.

- This past summer, architectural preservationists, master timber framers, art students, and other volunteers gathered in Sanok, Poland, to help recreate the roof and inner cupola of the Gwozdziec Synagogue. The synagogue, which was built in the 17th and 18th centuries and destroyed during World War II, is considered one of the finest examples of wooden synagogue architecture of its time. Once the synagogue components are built, they will have to be broken down and shipped off to Warsaw, where they will be installed to form the centerpiece of the Museum of the History of Jews, which is set to open in 2013. The reconstruction project is a collaboration of Handshouse Studio and the museum.

- Coming October 25, 2011
David Ben-Gurion was a mythic figure, a founding father of Israel, and the country's first prime minister, but he was also a real man, brimming with human contradictions, who was observed in all his complexity by Shimon Peres. Peres was a young man when he became a protégé of Ben-Gurion's in the 1940s and he remained closely connected to him until his death in 1973. He combines personal recollection and a deep sense of history, politics, and culture in his biography of David Ben-Gurion. Peres's extraordinary biography, written with David Landau, former editor-in-chief of Haaretz, is not a memoir, but it is inevitably shaped by Peres's time with "the old man," as Ben-Gurion was known by those around him. It offers an intimate look at history -- the creation of the State of Israel, its fateful wars, and the decisions, many of them controversial, that determined its future course. Peres, currently the president of Israel, has thought a great deal about the ...

- Rodger Kamenetz, acclaimed author of The Jew in the Lotus, has long been engaged in the study and practice of Jewish spirituality. And he has for many years taught a course in Prague on Franz Kafka. The more he learned about the life and work of Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav (great-grandson of the Ba'al Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism), the more aware he became of unexpected connections between the lives and works of Kafka, a secular artist fascinated by Jewish mysticism, and Rabbi Nachman, a religious mystic who reached out to secular Jews. Both men died young of tuberculosis. Both invented new forms of storytelling that explore the search for meaning in an illogical, unjust world. Both gained prominence with the posthumous publication of their writing. And most intriguing of all, both left strict instructions that their unpublished writings were to be burned after they died.
Kamenetz uses these episodes as points of departure on a journey into the spiritual quests of these two tr...
