- The smell of juniper, ponderosa pine and fresh rain lingers in the memories of my childhood summers at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in the early 1960s.
While other children rode bikes in suburban neighborhoods, my summer playground was the rim of one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. My parents managed the Grand Canyon Lodge and mailroom in the park.
Most mornings and evenings, we'd eat in the lodge dining room facing giant windows framing the canyon. The view was constantly shifting, with sunlight and shadows playing a game of tag. Often, thunderstorms with dark clouds and lightning danced across the sky. The booming thunder felt like it could shake me right out of my chair. Written by Stephanie DeGraw Jul 28, 2025
