- Today, Two Harbors is one of the North Shore’s most familiar destinations, known for Lake Superior views, ore docks and its picturesque waterfront.
But in the 1880s, the area looked very different.
Before Two Harbors became one city, two neighboring communities grew around Burlington Bay and Agate Bay. Then the arrival of the railroad and Iron Range ore transformed Agate Bay into a booming industrial center. Along its waterfront sprang Whiskey Row, a short-lived district filled with saloons, brothels and stories of violence, vice and larger-than-life characters. Archaeologists later excavated the site and uncovered remarkably preserved remnants including liquor jugs, shot glasses, shoes and even peanut shells.

Now the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has bought it for nearly $500 million - putting the facility, and the town surrounding it, at the center of the federal government’s expanding immigration detention system.
The Prairie Correctional Facility has had a complicated history. Appleton originally built the prison hoping it would bring jobs and economic stability to the community. It later became privately operated, closed in 2010 and remained empty despite repeated efforts to bring it back online.
Now that future has changed dramatically.

Tip: State Fair staff say the line gets shorter as the day goes on and recommend making it one of the last things you do rather than the first. We got in line before the exhibit opened at 9 a.m. and it took an hour and a half to get in.

- Minnesota Bureau of Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans on Thursday formally identified the shooter as Carlton Neal Johnson, and said “we believe he died in an exchange of gunfire” with Minneapolis police officers.

- In 1966, years before Christo and Jeanne-Claude became world famous for transforming landmarks and landscapes, they attempted an extraordinary art project in Minneapolis.
Working with art students, they created an enormous translucent package filled with 2,800 colorful balloons, wrapped in 8,000 square feet of polyethylene and tied with 2,700 feet of rope. Their plan was even stranger: lift the artwork by helicopter and fly it more than a mile from the Minneapolis Institute of Art to the Walker Art Center.
But when reporters and spectators gathered to watch, strong winds grounded the first attempt. The artists tried again the next day — and this time the giant package briefly took flight before the wind forced it back down. It never reached the Walker.
