- What does Minnesota cuisine actually taste like?
For James Beard Award-winning chef Karyn Tomlinson, it starts with embracing where we live: dramatic seasons, food grown close to home, old traditions of preserving and sharing, and the farmers and communities that make it possible.
Recorded live at the Minnesota Star Tribune’s North Star Summit, food and drink reporter Joy Summers talks with the chef and owner of Myriel in St. Paul about why Minnesota cuisine is having a moment - and why its future is about much more than hotdish.
Tomlinson shares how her Minnesota upbringing shaped her approach to food, why Myriel works directly with small and transitional farmers, and how immigrant food traditions continue to redefine what Midwestern cuisine can be. She also explains her commitment to whole-animal butchery, cooking within the limitations of the seasons and the story behind her celebrated apple pie.

- Description
- There’s a creek flowing beneath downtown Minneapolis — and most people walking above it have no idea it’s there.
Bassett Creek begins near Medicine Lake, winds through parts of Minneapolis and then disappears underground. From there, it travels through tunnels beneath the city, passes under Target Field, drops through an underground waterfall and eventually empties into the Mississippi River.
So why did Minneapolis bury a natural waterway in the first place?
In this episode of Curious Minnesota, host Erica Pearson talks with reporter Susan Du about the surprising history of Bassett Creek. By the early 1900s, the creek had become badly polluted with sewage and trash. Instead of restoring it, city leaders decided to put much of it underground — a decision that created expensive engineering and flooding problems for decades.
We trace the creek’s hidden route, learn how it disappeared beneath the growing city and explore an intriguing possibility: Could Ba...
