- The City of Sheridan has launched a traffic safety awareness effort.
The City of Sheridan Police Department has identified nine areas of the city that have the most injury vehicle accidents. "We will be running increased police presence in these particular parts of the city, initially giving warning tickets," according to Police Chief Rich Adriaens.
According to Lieutenant Andrew Conrad, Patrol Commander, "the three things a citizen can do to increase traffic safety are wear their seatbelts, reduce their speed and avoid driving under the influence."
According to Mayor Dave Kinskey, "if we all pull together as a community to help build awareness of traffic safety we can avoid tragedy. The holiday season is a time for everyone to be joyful -- not to be at the hospital."
The nine areas of the city are:
1.Coffeen Ave and Brundage Lane
2. Coffeen Ave and Sheridan Ave.

- A 40,000 square foot light manufacturing facility has broken ground in Sheridan. The Colorado firm, Vacutech, recently announced that it was expanding operations in the City of Sheridan's high tech park.
This week the firm began pouring the foundations for its new light manufacturing facility. Vacutech manufactures industrial vacuum systems that are sold all around the world.
According to Sheridan Mayor Dave Kinskey, "this is how we get out of this recession. A project like this creates two to three dozen new high paying jobs. Those employees spend and invest in the community and soon merchants and Main Street are hiring again."
"Economists say each new dollar of payroll turns over in a community six times," said Kinskey. "This 'multiplier effect' is key to economic development," according to the Sheridan Mayor.
According to Mayor Kinskey, recent news reports indicate that the national economy may be slowly recovering. "I don't know whether we're starting ...

- There were plenty of "oom-pah-pahs" and lots of beer at the first Oktoberfest held in Buffalo Saturday 09/25/10. The beer flowed freely in the heart of downtown at Crazy Woman Square as twenty-two home beer brewers showcased their products in a beer brewing contest, with plenty of samples on hand for those brewski aficionados.
But the Oktoberfest wasn't all about beer; there were plenty of other activities to keep the event family friendly. There was a costumed bicycle parade called "Tour de Lure" sponsored by the Sports Lure; a bison meat cook-off; a poker run and plenty of kids' games and lots of music.
Traditionally in Germany, Oktoberfest is held during the last week of September and the first week of October.

- The front lawn of Sheridan College turned into a metropolis of culinary, visual, and performing art as hundreds showed up to take a look at the 42 visual artists' booths on display. The free event featured 20 hours of live music and entertainment, a quick draw competition, and welding rodeo, plus all sorts of activities for the kids.
It was the 5th annual Big West Arts Festival held Saturday and Sunday at Sheridan College.
At one point on Saturday afternoon northwesterly winds kicked up enough to cause the artists to "batton down the hatches" and hang on tight to their canvas galleries, but that didn't dissuade the crowds.
Ranked #54 among the top 200 art fairs in the country the Big West Arts Festival is not a western art festival, but an art festival in the big West.

- "From the first boot kicked to the last tail gate shut, the most fun you'll have anywhere."
That's the theme of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo and Saturday night began with the time-honored tradition -- the annual "Boot Kick-off." It was all about technique -- or lack of it; the kind of sock you wear, or no sock at all; kicking that boot way up high, or shooting it fast and straight. No matter which way they kicked it, it was a great way to kick off this year's Sheridan WYO Rodeo. Gina Juroszek-Smith garnered 1st in the 18 and over women's category, and Tyler Wells took 1st in the men's 18 and over division.
But that wasn't all. Those little buckaroos had their turn at the starting gate. Before the boot kick-off, those wee wranglers, eight and under, mounted their steeds and competed in the timed event...barrel racing. Yup, those little cowpokes took off on their stick horses and ran as fast as they could in the cloverleaf pattern around the barrels.
