- Description
- Essential work has always been essential work. It just took a pandemic for many to recognize it as such. Here are the images and words of those who have, to varying degrees, risked their health to keep a nation working.
Cashiers and food service workers might be called heroes now, but we know that the essential workers risking the most often make the least. We also know that the burden of this frontline work falls disproportionately to women and people of color. As COVID-19 rips through meatpacking plants and restaurants and farms, it finds footholds in communities with fewer resources, further straining already strained families.
It remains to be seen whether we will continue to respect this work after the pandemic eventually fades — and moreover, whether we might offer essential workers more than heartfelt thanks.
For the past four months, The Chronicle has spent time with more than a dozen essential workers to hear about their work and their ...

- Kippy Marks didn’t always know he wanted to be a violinist. Struggling to cope with his parent’s divorce as a child and trying to understand “his place in the world,” he decided he’d be a lawyer. And then president. But one day, in the fourth grade, his true calling came to light.
He was giving a presentation to his class when the school orchestra walked in. They unpacked their instruments and started to play, and he watched in disbelief as he lost the attention of his classmates. Then he noticed the violinist in the group. “I just watched the body mechanics of the man playing violin, and saw the triangular shape he made with his body and I knew I could do that too,” Marks said. When the band asked after their performance if anyone wanted to try one of the instruments, Marks raised his hand. He grabbed the violin, played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and looked to see if his audience was captivated. They were.

- Date posted
- Description
- A video obtained by The Chronicle shows the fatal shooting by a Danville police officer of 32-year-old Tyrell Wilson, a homeless Black man who had been staying near a public parking lot used by carpoolers.
The video, taken by a witness to the shooting, does not appear to capture Wilson advance toward Officer Andrew Hall, as Danville police said he did before he was shot on March 11. It shows the two men facing one another, standing feet apart shortly before noon that day at Sycamore Valley Road and Camino Ramon.
In the video, Wilson can be seen clutching a bag in his left hand. For four seconds, Hall appeared to move toward Wilson, as Wilson appeared to step backward. Hall was pointing his gun at Wilson, who was facing him, then Hall shot once, the video shows. Wilson collapses on his back and Hall stands over him.
The video does not show Wilson make any sudden moves toward the officer.

- Chinese Woman Recounts Anti-Asian, Racist Encounter in Bay Area Park
- Date posted
- Description
- Kelly Yang, an author who moved to the U.S. from China at age 6, recalls a racist incident she encountered while with her children and dog at an East Bay Park.
“It’s an in-your-face blatant reminder, ‘No, we don’t accept you, you’re an outsider no matter what you’ve done,’” Yang said. “That’s the thing that’s really hurtful.”
After posting about the encounter on social media, Yang experienced a flood of support, but also saw hurtful comments: People told her discrimination against Asian Americans doesn’t exist, that she made it all up. It took months for her to return to that park. Almost a year later, she still thinks about the incident.

- The Doodler: A New Hunt For A Forgotten Serial Killer
- Date posted
- Description
- The Golden State Killer. The Unabomber. Ted Bundy. You’re probably familiar with these serial killers. But in the mid-1970s, another monster terrorized San Francisco’s gay community. He was coined “The Doodler,” and he may have been responsible for as many victims as the Zodiac Killer, yet you’ve probably never heard of him. Plagued by a complicated investigation, a frightened public, and the hesitation of many to come forward, the case went cold, and a killer walked free. Nearly 50 years later, a renewed hunt for a forgotten serial killer seeks to change that. Follow the story on “The Doodler” podcast, new episodes every Tuesday starting March 16th.

- Mass COVID-19 Vaccination Site Opens in Oakland for Black, Latino Communities
- Date posted
- Description
- A West Oakland church hosted a clinic intended to vaccinate Black and Latino communities. But the majority of vaccines went to white people after hundreds of people waited, some overnight, for a chance to be vaccinated at the first-come, first-serve clinic, its organizer said.
Of the 2,306 doses administered throughout the week-long clinic, Wallace estimates that about 60% went to white people, with the remaining 40% going to the demographic the clinic was intended to serve: Black, Latino and Pacific Islander people. While the clinic was aimed at the communities of color surrounding the West Oakland church, Wallace said it was “hard to say” how many of those vaccinated were local.

Stoked by racist political rhetoric about the coronavirus, encounters like these have become more common amid the pandemic, according to anecdotal reports and anti-bigotry groups. Now, Asian American medical professionals and advocates say the discrimination continues a year later — even as health care workers try to save the lives of the people disparaging them.
