- Description
- West Bengal is holding elections even as more than 27 lakh voters have been deprived of their right to vote. Many of them are people who voted in the last election, but have been removed from the electoral roll despite attending hearings and producing their documents during the special intensive revision.
Analysts who studied the deletions found that Muslim voters have been hit the worst. How are those excluded from the voter list responding to this? And what does it mean for politics in the state?
To find out, Scroll travelled through the districts of Malda and Murshidabad, speaking to disenfranchised voters and politicians on the ground.

- Decreasing seats for South will be ‘death warrant for federal India’: Kerala MP John Brittas
- Runtime

- Description
- In 1976, Indira Gandhi froze the numbers of Parliamentary seats each state had. The argument was simple: states doing well when it came to family planning should not have to suffer by having their representation in Parliament reduced.
But the Modi government now seeks to end this freeze with a new set of bills. And it wants it to be done urgently: a special session of Parliament will convene on Thursday to try and pass these laws.
To understand why the South is opposing this, Scroll speaks to John Brittas, Rajya Sabha MP from Kerala.

He also delves into the weeds of Indian publishing. Why are Indians not reading anymore? Is English eating up the space for other Indian languages? Why do publishers now chase influencers to write books? Is the space for serious literature now dead?

- Description
- Over the past months, the entire world watched in surprise as Iran stood up to the most powerful militaries in the world.
On February 28, when the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran, killing its head of state, Trump was hoping for a quick, Venezuela-style regime change. Instead, Iran fought back, attacking Arab states in the region which host American military bases and even successfully closing off the Strait of Hormuz, a major thoroughfare for the world's oil.
On this episode of Scroll Adda, writer and anthropologist Alex Reza Shams explains that one should not be surprised by this dogged Iranian resistance. For decades now, sanctions have made Iran self-sufficient in a way few countries are. Moreover, for the Iranian government this is an existential war. There is no option of surrender.
In fact, Shams argues that this war might end up strengthening extremist elements within Iran. The fact that the United States has broken all agreements wi...

- The Iran War is now three weeks old.
Scroll’s Shoaib Daniyal speaks to Dr Foad Izadi, a professor of Tehran University to understand the impact of the war on the people of Iran.
Izadi says that popular morale is still high. Rather than Iranians pulling down the government – one of the stated war aims of the United States and Israel – the attack has led to increased anger against Trump and Netanyahu.
Izadi, however, is disappointed with India’s stand and says he believes that Delhi could go beyond its current stance that now tilts towards Washington and Tel Aviv.

- Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sailed smoothly past a potential clash with Donald Trump during an official visit to the US.
When a Japanese reporter asked why allies were not included in talks about the Iran strikes before they happened, US President Donald Trump brought up Pearl Harbor in response.
Imperial Japan launched a pre-emptive attack on the key US Pacific base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, hoping to strike a decisive blow before an expected US entry into World War II.
More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack that president Franklin D. Roosevelt said would live "in infamy." The United States ended World War II by dropping two atomic bombs on Japan, the only use of nuclear weapons in history.

- Description
- What if Rs 66 is all that you earned after working hard all day? And not just one day, but every day, for years. Will you be able to survive?
This is the question that midday meal workers in Chhattisgarh asked the government as they staged a protest in the state capital, demanding an increase in their daily wages from Rs 66 to at least Rs 350.
The government argued that midday meal workers are paid Rs 66 a day, which comes to a monthly Rs 2,000, because the work requires only two hours of their labour.
But is this the case? We travelled to the ground to find out.
Watch our report from Chhattisgarh.

- Uttam Nagar Killing: Was It Really Communal?

- Description
- On the afternoon of March 4, the day of Holi, an argument broke out in a narrow lane in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar after a water balloon thrown by a child landed on a woman from a neighbouring family. The argument soon spiralled into a clash between the two families that ended in the death of a 26-year-old man.
Since he was Hindu and the neighbours were Muslim, Hindutva groups jumped in the fray, alleging that his murder was a communal hate crime. Over the next few days, 16 men from the Muslim family were arrested and a portion of their house was demolished by local authorities.
Was this a clash between two families or something much larger? Scroll went to Uttam Nagar to find out.
