Batagay (aka Batagaika) Crater goes by many names. Scientists call it a retrogressive thaw megaslump; the internet may know it best as the Doorway to the Underworld. And since it opened up in the Siberian permafrost over half a century ago, it's been getting bigger.

Everyone has that friend who loves records and insists that analog music is superior to digital. But is that true?
Hosted by: Hank Green (he/him)
Correction:
2:06 Although this graphic can be found in many seemingly reputable sources, we’ve ultimately determined that it’s misleading. Digital recordings can produce continuous sound waves with no information lost if the sample rate is sufficiently high. The Nyquist-Shannon theorem states that if the digital sample rate is at least twice the highest frequency of the signal, the output is a perfect copy—not an approximation—of the original analog sound wave. SciShow appreciates the many comments on this and regrets the error.

Why would astrophysicists care about a two millennia old Roman shipwreck between the islands of Sardinia and Mal Di Ventre? Why would archaeologists care about a particle physics experiment hiding deep beneath the Apennine Mountains, seeking to answer one of the most fundamental mysteries of reality as we know it? The answer to both of those questions is, in fact, a single story.

- What Made This Huge Hole Under Greenland?
- Date posted

- Description
- In the mid-2010s, researchers discovered something odd underneath Greenland - there was a giant hole under a glacier, and they had no idea what had caused it. More confusing still, other researchers were searching for the cause of a mini Ice Age that killed off most of the megafauna and wiped out the Clovis people. Could the Greenland hole be the key to this mystery? Scientists turned to a humble little mineral to put all the pieces together: Quartz.

NASA scientists are said to have invented a lot of household items over the decades. Some, like Velcro, or Tang, or the first cordless power tools, are misattributions. But other claims are totally legit. And you probably own at least one of those spinoff technologies right now.

Adding sand to beaches sounds like it's an oxymoronic thing to do, but it's totally a thing. And there's some major benefits, like protecting our coastlines from storms and conserving ecosystems. But there are also some major drawbacks, and the practice of beach nourishment can end up harming the same ecosystems we want to help. So the question is, is it worth it to dump more sand onto our beaches?

Everyone knows where Punt is, right? The Ancient Egyptians sure did — they traded with them for millennia. But apparently they were *so* familiar with its location, they never bothered to write it down for posterity. So archaeologists have been trying to find Punt for over a century...and they may have finally done it.
