In 1931, Professor Auguste Piccard and his assistant Dr. Kipfer took a trip to Earth's stratosphere. Despite setback after setback (and being presumed dead by everyone back on the ground), they were able to both set a new altitude record and help prove where a bunch of mysterious radiation was coming from.

There's a lot that unites us as humans. How much we sleep, how much we eat, how much we travel... wait, what? Yeah, turns out that the vast majority of human populations have the same average amount of travel time per day. Here's what the research says about why that is, and how learning this could shape our future.

- January 1925 was a scary time to be alive in the remote Alaskan town of Nome. An outbreak of diphtheria had quickly killed two small children, and an untold number would follow if the local doctor couldn't get his hands on a particular antitoxin. The US government had an emergency supply in Anchorage, but getting it to Nome would require a thousand-kilometer journey through blisteringly cold temperatures and the occasional blizzard... and the only viable travel method was a sled pulled by a team of dogs.
Lucky for everyone, those sled dogs (and their human mushers) were very good at what they do.
