- With a rich history that goes back centuries, exploring Rwanda’s cultural heritage is a must for both the discerning domestic and foreign tourist. And with over 300 historical sites, according to the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda (INMR), there are plenty of places to visit.
Out of these sites, only a few have been developed into museums

Before 2007, there was only one museum in Rwanda- The National Museum of Rwanda, located in Huye District, in the Southern Province. Since then, the number has increased eightfold.
The New Times explored these different museums and met with various stakeholders to understand how Government of Rwanda’s investment in the different museums and heritage sites in the country has increased not only tourism dollars but also understanding of Rwanda’s past.

- Meet Faustin Kunde, a 50-year old Rwandan ex-armed forces commando who has lived quite the life. First as a highly trained member of the FAR (Forces Armées Rwandaise), and later upon their defeat by the rebel RPF (Rwanda Patriotic Front) a refugee in the Democratic Republic of Congo (then known as Zaire).
His military skills were used first by Congo Brazzaville’s rebel and then president Dennis Sasou Nguesso, who employed him as a bodyguard and then later by Laurent Desire Kabila. Later his skills were then employed by the FDLR, a genocidal armed group that is accused of horrendous human rights abuses.
Today he is back in Rwanda, living a life that was, for him, barely imaginable.
In this Episode of the Survivor Series, he reveals all about his experience in exile and lifts the lid on the ideology that the FDLR employs up to date.

- When the Genocide against the Tutsi ended in July 1994 over million people had been murdered and a third of the victims were children. In addition to that tragedy, over 100,000 children were orphaned according to Unicef.
These children had been orphaned because either their parents were murdered during the Genocide, or they had passed away shortly after.
The challenge of finding homes for these vulnerable children was one that needed the involvement of the entire Rwandan community and one of the most successful campaigns to do so was the ‘One Dollar Campaign’.
The campaign, a brainchild of the Association of Student Survivors of the Genocide (AERG) and members of the Rwandan Diaspora, raised money within and outside the country, money that was put to good use.
With the money raised, the AERG hostel, commonly known as the One Dollar Campaign complex, was built at a cost of Rwf1.7 billion in the Kigali suburb of Kinyinya.
