The Head of State made the remarks while officiating the pass out of the 11th intake of Officer Basic Training, commissioning 624 officer cadets who graduated with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) at Rwanda Military Academy in Gako, Bugesera District.

Serge Rusagara Sakumi, born and raised in Rwanda by parents who had various business interests during the tumultuous times under the genocidal regime, recalls the discipline and other moral values instilled by his parents during his childhood.

- Alice Wairimu Nderitu, the United Nations Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide, was among the many foreign dignitaries and leaders who travelled to Kigali to stand with Rwandans on the occasion of the 30th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, on April 7. The next day, The New Times’ Moise Bahati got to interview her.
In the interview, Nderitu talked about, among other things, her reflection of Rwanda’s journey of reconciliation and keeping the memory, as well as the what her office is doing to counter the denial of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
She tackled the question of genocide denial, revisionism, and the continued presence in eastern DR Congo of the FDLR, and especially the genocidal militia group’s collaboration with the Congolese Government. Nderitu also talks about risk factors for a genocide in eastern DR Congo, where the Congolese Tutsi and Banyamulenge communities are persecuted.

- Many people may not remember events when they were six years old, but experts suggest that adults can typically recall memories from around 3-4 years old. This applies more when the events were either very thrilling or extremely painful and traumatic—two extremes.
Such is the case for Felix Nduwamungu, who was just six years old when the Genocide against the Tutsi started on April 7, 1994.
Born in the Nkanka sector of Rusizi District, Nduwamungu witnessed the massacre of many of his family members. He saw his mother, younger brother, sister, and other relatives killed in broad daylight. At six, his survival instincts saw him through miraculously.
As Rwanda commemorates 30 years after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Nduwamungu reflects on a very difficult journey.
