Election 2026
By Tim Watkin
Polls leading into the campaign proper, which kicked off this week with Parliament rising and the two major parties holding their campaign launches, have been filled with headlines about “kingmakers”. Initially, New Zealand First was given the title, as it has been so many times before. But more recently polls have showed the new kid, Opportunity, holding the balance of power.
But if we take the parties at face value, “kingmaker” is a word that no longer makes sense in 2026. The fluidity of previous election campaigns, when parties would often refuse to say who they might work with until the people had spoken, has been replaced with coalition calcification.
New Zealand First has ruled out...

It estimated that particular settlement would cost just shy of $4.5b over four years, but told RNZ it had not costed restoring the pay equity scheme.
Last year the government overhauled the Equal Pay Act, retrospectively stripping nurses, teachers, carers and other female-dominated workforces of the right to pursue pay equity claims under the existing law.
The controversial legislation stopped the 33 claims underway and raised the threshold for proving work has been historically undervalued. At the time, Finance Minister Nicola Willis said savings amounted to about $12.8b over the next four years.
The Greens would reverse those changes if elected, but were open to making improvements to the scheme.

- Speaking to reporters in Auckland, ACT leader David Seymour says the Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Update (PREFU) has "vindicated" his party's drive for savings | Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/RNZVideo?subscribe
"We have saved money in this government, but actually nowhere near enough. And as the bond market increases interest rates on government debt all around the world, we are going to have to go further and faster to balance the books with no new taxes."
He reiterated his call for fewer government departments, the number of public servants to be reduced to one percent of the total population.
"The surplus being promised is two years later than was promised before the last election. To achieve that is going to require major reductions in the number of public servants and government departments, which I think we should do."

He also praised Nicola Willis' "responsible economic management," and warned the "radical four-way" opposition would put it all at risk.
"Our plan is genuinely working, it is working. We have been doing the right things from day one, under Nicola's leadership. She's done an exceptionally good job, there is no better finance minister in this country, and she's going to go down as one of the greatest, for the turnaround that she's been orchestrating."
Nicola Willis, now speaking in her capacity as National's finance spokesperson, said there was now a path to "firm fiscal and economic foundations," and that the Green Party would put a "wrecking ball" through it.
Luxon was also not backing down from his decision to rule out Opportunity, and described its bottom line...

- Labour leader Chris Hipkins says the Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Update (Prefu) is "the verdict" on National's track record, with government debt, unemployment, and inflation staying higher for longer, and a return to surplus still forecast later than the update prior to the last election | Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/RNZVideo?sub_confirmation=1
The Prefu - released by Nicola Willis on Tuesday - forecast a deficit of $6.8 billion in 2026/27, down from the May Budget's $11.4 billion prediction. Officials expected that to narrow to just $0.8b the next year - what Willis described as "within a hair's breadth of a surplus".

It also highlighted its commitment to "right-sizing government" and "public sector reform", promising to reduce core Crown spending below 30 percent of GDP.
National's previous fiscal policy was to drive down spending towards 30 percent.
The change - while very slight - widens the gap between National's prescription and Labour's.
Last month, Labour set its spending cap at 33 percent of GDP in the medium term.
