- DHR Health says it has achieved another first in the RGV. They successfully used Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), also known as extracorporeal life support, to save the life of a 57 year old Edinburg woman. Maria Dalcour was rushed to the Level 1 Trauma Center after suffering a massive heart attack on February 19, 2023. The following day her heart stopped, and the ICU staff restarted her heart, but she was progressing toward cardiac arrest again. The ECMO team had just minutes to connect the ECMO machine through plastic tubes in Dalcour’s legs to circulate her blood into the heart-lung machine, remove carbon dioxide, and send oxygen-filled blood back to the tissues in her body. Dalcour’s life was saved.
In the attached video, Dr. Jeffrey Skubic, who specializes in trauma surgery and emergency general surgery, discusses ECMO treatment at DHR.

- The National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS) has just concluded the 2023 Tejas Foco Conference on UT-Rio Grande Valley’s Brownsville Campus.
The three-day event was a collaboration between NACCS and the UTRGV Department of Criminal Justice, the College of Education and P-16 Integration, the Center for Mexican American Studies and the Office of the Provost.
The theme of this year’s event was “Confronting/Resisting the Colonizer Within: A History of Violence, Discrimination/Oppression and Shame.”
In this video, Dr. Rosalva Resendiz, associate professor of Criminal Justice at UTRGV, reviews the conference with Dr. Gary Joe Mounce, a UTRGV Professor Emeritus and Rio Grande Guardian commentator.

- La Joya City Council has officially named its park on Military Highway and Garza Road the “Billy Leo Municipal Park.”
Leo, who passed away five years ago, was the legendary mayor of La Joya for many years. He was also a former Hidalgo County Clerk.
Family, friends and elected officials paid their respects at a ceremony held at the park. It took place on the same day as the 4th Annual Billy Leo Foundation BBQ Cook-off. The foundation provides scholarships to local students.
