- Laguna Madre Water District (LMWD) wants to hear from voters on plans to build a seawater desalination plant. The vote will take place on May 3. Eduardo Salazar, LMWD’s director of finance, has said such a plant would impact utility rates. “Based on our current estimates, utility bills are expected to increase by approximately 25% to 35% once the facility becomes operational in 2028,” Salazar has said. But, in an interview with Ron Whitlock Reports, Carlos Galvan, general manager for LMWD, says the desalination plant is needed. Veteran broadcaster Ron Whitlock has endorsed the project.

The agreement, which has been in place for nearly three decades, has to be ratified in Congress every few years and when it comes up for renewal, tomato growers in Florida always try to have the agreement quashed. Now, the U.S. Department of Commerce has signaled its intention to withdraw from the agreement. Galeazzi says this would be disastrous for importers of tomatoes from Mexico and consumers throughout the country. - There was plenty of fanfare and excitement in Harlingen last May when the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a $7.4 million grant for HOPE For Small Farm Sustainability. The nonprofit organization, run by farmers Diana and Saul Garcia Padilla, was planning to use the money to acquire agricultural land and assist small farming operations around Texas. But, everything has ground to halt and HOPE does not now know if it will receive the money. Diana Garcia Padilla says when the Trump Administration came in, a pause was placed on the release of funds. Of the $7.4 million, she has only received $300,000. Padilla said she has reached out to a member of the House Committee on Agriculture, US Rep. Monica De La Cruz, for answers but to no avail.

- Marv Esterly, aviation director of Valley International Airport, has long believed the Rio Grande Valley should have one large airport, instead of the current three smaller airports - VIA, McAllen, and Brownsville. Of the three, VIA, in Harlingen, would be the best one to develop into a larger airport because it is more centrally located than the other two, he says. Yes, some people might have to drive 30 or 40 minutes more to get to the airport, Esterly acknowledges. But, he says, they would save an hour or two waiting for connecting flights in Houston or Dallas. That is because one large airport in the RGV would have more direct destinations.

- RioPlex, the new economic development group formed by private organizations to promote the Rio Grande Valley and northern Tamaulipas, is hosting a big conference in Houston later this week. It is titled: "Texas Port to the Stars FDI Summit." FDI stands for foreign direct investment. The event takes place on the evening of April 9, and through the day of April 10, 2025, at the Westin Galleria in Houston. More than a dozen foreign consulate's offices will be represented at the conference, along with the economic development and tourism office of the Governor of Texas. Four mayors from some of the Valley's biggest cities will speak at the event. Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez says the Valley has never promoted itself in another metro area in this fashion before. So, the summit will be unique. Cortez set the scene for the conference in an exclusive interview with the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service.
