- Description
- Income inequality has reached record highs in most OECD countries and remains at even higher levels in many emerging economies. The richest 10% of the population now earn 9.6 times the income of the poorest 10% in the OECD, up from 7:1 in the 1980s and 9:1 in the 2000s, according to, 'In It Together: Why Less Inequality Benefits All,' published in 2015. In other words, inequalities had been widening even before the 2008 financial crisis, the OECD finds, and this can undermine economic and social well-being. The organisation calls for policies to foster inclusive growth.

- Alcohol consumption has fallen slightly in OECD countries over the past twenty years. But young people and women are drinking more. Alcohol is becoming more easily available, more affordable and advertised more effectively, but there are hidden costs. Alcohol takes many direct and indirect tolls on our society, from traffic accidents to extra healthcare costs. The OECD presents four measures to greatly reduce alcohol's damage on individuals and society.

People with mild to moderate disorders, such as anxiety or depression, are twice as likely to be unemployed. They also run a much higher risk of living in poverty and social marginalisation. The facts are clear: it’s time to act.

And over the past decade, migrants have accounted for 70% of the increase in the working-age population in the OECD area, according to the OECD’s 2014 International Migration Outlook. The data shows a shift in the countries of origin, and also in the skills the migrants offer since 2000.

Banking secrecy for tax purposes is coming to an end as a growing number of countries, including financial centers, commit to automatic exchange of information (AEOI). This is good news for taxpayers and helps fight tax fraud and crime too.
