- Description
- What are your priorities when it comes to life satisfaction and your personal well-being? Wealth? Your health? Or your happiness? And how could you measure it?
The OECD’s Better Life Index (BLI) allows you as citizens to compare the quality of life among countries in 11 well-being dimensions and to create your very own index based on what matters most to you. Do you put clean air above personal safety, and how important is your income or job to you, or do you prefer to focus on work-life balance?
Since the BLI was launched in 2011, over 110,000 people have integrated their responses into an interactive map. Different people in different places, and they rate the Better Life Index differently.
Try it at http://www.oecdbetterlifeindex.org/ responses and put yourself on the map!

OECD Week 2016 will place a central emphasis on the need for policies that strengthen productivity, and in so doing, promote inclusive and sustainable growth. Since the crisis, productivity growth has slowed and inequality has been getting worse. Addressing inequality is essential to ensuring more productive economies while allaying conventional fears that increasing productivity means working longer, harder and later in life. - How can policy best address inequality? As the 2008 global financial crisis showed, the benefits of economic growth do not trickle down to all; and for a sustainable recovery, growth must be inclusive. The OECD has launched the Centre for Opportunity and Equality to promote its research and provide a forum to discuss how policies can best address inequalities in areas including income, wealth, health and education, and their social and economic consequences. Policies must be redesigned to boost growth and inclusiveness so that everyone and every place can benefit from the wealth generated from economic growth.

- Fighting tax evasion: How to end hybrid mismatch arrangements
- Runtime
- 1:38
- Date posted
- Description
- Globalisation has generated opportunities for multinational enterprises to reduce their taxes, often by moving profits to offshore financial centres, and this can erode a country's tax base. The OECD/G20 Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) Project provides governments with solutions for closing the gaps in existing international rules, that currently allow corporate profits to “disappear” or be artificially shifted to low/no tax environments, where little or no economic activity takes place. One target of attention is hybrid financial instruments, such as a convertible bond whose tax treatment might differ between countries, thanks to different laws. Is there a solution? A change to the domestic laws to create more coherence between them may be the answer since this would close down another one of those gaps that enable tax avoidance to take place.

- Description
- Globalization has benefited businesses but has also created opportunities for large multinational enterprises to shift profits and report them in low tax jurisdictions to greatly reduce their tax bill. This practice is hard for individual countries to audit, yet it erodes the tax bases which they rely on to pay for public services like roads, hospitals and schools. Country by Country Reporting (CBCR) can improve financial transparency and bolster the OECD/G20 Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) project by providing governments with solutions for closing the gaps in existing international tax rules that allow corporate profits to “disappear” or be artificially shifted to low or no-tax jurisdictions, even if none of their business activity takes place there.

- The OECD/G20 Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) Project provides governments with solutions for closing the gaps in existing international rules, that currently allow corporate profits to “disappear” or be artificially shifted to low/no tax environments, where little or no economic activity takes place. By using a letterbox or shell company, international firms can take advantage of tax treaties between two countries it does business in to avoid paying tax. To end this so-called treaty shopping, the OECD BEPS project would like only true residents to qualify for tax treaty benefits.

Globalisation has offered multinational enterprises ever-increasing opportunities to reduce their taxes in the digital economy, often by moving profits to offshore financial centres. The result – governments are losing billions of dollars annually. The OECD/G20 Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) Project provides governments with solutions to level the playing field by closing gaps in existing international rules that currently allow corporate profits to “disappear” or be artificially shifted to low/no tax environments, where little or no economic activity takes place.
