- Description
- Increasingly sedentary lifestyles and poor attitudes towards diet and nutrition are having hugely damaging effects on the overall health of the younger generation. This is not only bad for the body, but for the mind too – remember that children are now also confronted with an extremely complex world where the truth is a moving target and new lifestyle-altering technologies appear every other month. But what effect does poor physical and mental health have on the learning process? Dr. Uwe Pühse, Head of Sport Science at the University of Basel, and Tracey Burns, Senior Analyst in the OECD’s Directorate for Education and Skills, discuss the potential damage that can be done to a student’s education, and what we can do about it.

- We need to talk about nitrogen
- Runtime
- 4:17
- Date posted
- Description
- Excess nitrogen pollutes air, soil and water, increases greenhouse gas emissions, and impacts biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Environmental policy measures have been taken to reduce the impacts of nitrogen on ecosystems and human health. However, while OECD nitrogen emissions have been reduced, the concentrations of nitrogen forms in air, soil and water still remain much too high overall.
We need better mapping and understanding of the link between sources, pathways and impacts of nitrogen, that is impact-pathway analysis. Governments also need to establish national nitrogen budgets to make sure that policies to address local and global nitrogen impacts are reducing the overall quantities of excess nitrogen being released into the environment at the national level. Watch this video to learn more about the policy approaches to managing the risks and uncertainty of disrupting the nitrogen cycle.

- Description
- Infrastructure worldwide has suffered from chronic under-investment for decades and currently makes up more than 60% of greenhouse gas emissions. A deep transformation of existing infrastructure systems is needed for both climate and development, one that includes systemic conceptual and behavioural changes in the ways in which we manage and govern our societies and economies.
The OECD, UN Environment and the World Bank Group “Financing Climate Futures: Rethinking Infrastructure” initiative focuses on how governments can move beyond the current incremental approach to climate action and more effectively align financial flows with climate and development priorities. It explores six key transformative areas that will be critical to align financial flows with low-emission and resilient societies (planning, innovation, budgeting, private finance, development finance, and cities) and looks at how rapid socio-economic and technological developments, such as digitalisation, ...

- Cities are home to more than half of the world’s population and are the engines of economic growth and employment. However, cities also face major environmental, economic and social challenges, many of which are associated with the fact that urban development has occurred. Urban sprawl is often cited as a driver of several of these challenges, including biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, road congestion and lack of affordable housing. What exactly is urban sprawl and how can it be measured? Are cities in OECD countries sprawling and how is this impacting the environment?

Collecting, sorting, and processing waste plastic in recycling centres can be expensive and some plastics cannot be recycled because of the hazardous chemicals used to produce them. OECD is tackling today’s most challenging resource management issues by promoting the sustainable use of materials in order to reduce their negative environmental impacts, encouraging resource efficiency and the transition towards a circular economy.
