- On February 10, 1961, the 32-year old Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a speech on the campus of New York University. Dr. King's speech, "The Future of Integration," advocated for civil rights and nonviolent protest for social change. He said, "Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable ... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals."
Dr. King's call for nonviolent protest came to a head in 1963, when more than 200,000 dedicated individuals took part in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in the nation's capital. On the eve of the 50 year anniversary, NYU Dialogues will host a panel to reflect on this historical event of the civil rights movement. Including policymakers, academics, and civil rights leaders, this discussion will explore how the March shaped and influenced societal and policy changes in the United States, and advanced ...

NYU researchers formally joined the search in 2006, when they began collaborating on the A Toroidal LHC Apparatus, or ATLAS, one of the main detectors at the Large Hadron Collider, which was used to make the discovery of Higgs. NYU faculty on the team include professors Peter Nemethy, who focuses on new, fundamental forces, and Allen Mincer, who led the data-collection team, as well as professors Kyle Cranmer, who was awarded a Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering for his studies on the Higgs search, and Andrew Haas.

Both parties have exploited the ability to redistrict, minimizing the role of voters in the political process. This gerrymandering leads to most incumbents facing only token opposition and partisan distortions within states and the nation overall.

Panelists explored how to replace gerrymandered winner-take-all elections with nonpartisan commissions tasked to create district plans designed for fair representation voting methods that hold the promise to improve politics, provide fairer representation for women and racial minorities, allow both major parties and independents to compete in on...
