- When a Shakespearean character walks on stage, their clothes enable us to "immediately begin to see who they are," says Gallatin associate professor Bella Mirabella. Not surprisingly, dress that was foreign to English audiences during the Renaissance made for quick assumptions about dignity, strength, and trustworthiness. In the book "Shakespeare and Costume", coedited by Mirabella and Patricia Lennox, scholars examine the historical context of clothing in the plays, with an eye toward how conceptions of race and gender were reflected in costuming in different eras.

The event coincides with the release of a CNAS report on the effects and effectiveness of sanctions since 9/11. Some questions this conference will explore include: how can the United States measure and achieve intended effects from the use of coercive economic measures? What place should sanctions have in the U.S. national security arsenal? And as American rivals become more familiar with the tools of economic statecraft, what defensive measures are available to protect U.S. interests from retaliation for the imposition of sanctions?

In today's world, our reliance on technology has created a Big Data revolution that has transformed how we live, work, and think. Many questions arise, however, when it comes to the ethical issues related to privacy, confidentiality and identity, especially when personal data is so easily and readily collected, creating the ability to generate enormous amounts of power and wealth. The Weissberg Forum explored this conflict between utility and privacy from a variety of perspectives, including law, commerce, health, and national security. Charles Seife presented a keynote address entitled, "Information Battles: The Double-Edged Sword of Big Data"

- From the collapse of the Soviet Union to the rise of ISIS, the U.S. has pursued at least three distinct grand strategies: democratic enlargement (Clinton), assertive primacy (Bush), and restraint and rebalancing (Obama). Given the changeability of strategy after 45 years of containment and deterrence, what’s next? Despite wide differences among the candidates, does the nature of the unfolding world and our resource limits allow us to make educated guesses about the posture of the next President? Can U.S. foreign policy be more coherent and effective -- responsive to both opportunities and threats -- in the next decade and beyond? NYU Washington, DC welcomed CGA Clinical Professor Michael Oppenheimer in conversation with Eurasia Group President Ian Bremmer and Brookings Vice President Bruce Jones on the alternative paths for managing American strategy abroad.

The art installation, “Thinking of You,” was made possible by the survivors, activists and other women who donated dresses, and was sponsored by President Atifete Jahjaga. The documentary The Making of #MendojPërTy/ #ThinkingOfYou, produced by Anna Di Lellio and Fitim Shala, is the story of how art and activism can change the culture of isolation, resignation and shame that surrounds wartime sexual violence. - In Tehran in 1961, the young Parviz Tanavoli—part of the saqqakhaneh group of artists drawing on Iranian religious and cultural imagery to create modernist, often abstract works—met art collector Abby Weed Grey, who arranged for him to serve as artist-in-residence at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design near her home in St. Paul. The two became friends, and in 1964, Grey helped Tanavoli, then teaching at the University of Tehran, set up Iran's first bronze foundry there. Grey went on to purchase 80 of Tanavoli's works, which often incorporate mixed media and found materials, and Tanavoli helped her build the collection of modern Iranian work now held at NYU's Grey Art Gallery, which she founded in 1975. The Grey now holds more of Tanavoli's work than any other institution in the world. Widely regarded as Iran's foremost living sculptor, Tanavoli is one of the half-dozen artists featured in the Grey's exhibition "Global/Local: Six Artists From Iran," which runs through April 2,...
