- Continued political divide, negotiation stagnation, and unwavering distrust are only some of the many obstacles in the festering conflict between Israel and Palestine. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas have not reached a deal, nor does this seem to be likely in the near future.
In what some call the post-Oslo era, can this conflict be resolved without US intervention? Does the current administration’s neglect of new measures to continue propagating “land for peace” unveil the US’s future role? What is the best solution to this conflict?
This program, hosted by NYU Washington, DC, features a discussion between Speaker of the Fifteenth Knesset and NYU AD Visiting Professor, Avrum Burg, and President and Co-Founder of the Arab American Institute and NYU Visiting Scholar, James Zogby, who will delve into some of the conflict’s issues surrounding border settlements and security, refugees, and the p...

- NYU Washington, DC and the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) co-hosted a panel discussion on religious-based bullying.
Last year, ISPU’s annual American Muslim Poll revealed that more than 1 in 3 Muslim families report bullying of their child in school because of their religion. In 1 in 4 of those cases involving Muslim students, a teacher or administrator perpetuated the bullying. Given the prevalence rates and negative mental health outcomes associated with religious-based bullying, it must be considered a public health issue in need of prevention and intervention attention. This new report provided insights from the first-ever National Interfaith Anti-Bullying Summit held in Washington, DC, on December 2–3, 2017. The Summit gathered a multitude of experts on the issue, including advocates, researchers, teachers, parents, physicians, mental health practitioners, and, most importantly, targets of bullying to share their stories of the abuse and how ...

Three years later, former National Security Agency subcontractor Edward Snowden leaked top secret information about surveillance activities by the NSA. More recently, the Panama Papers became the biggest data leak in the history of journalism: over 11 million documents containing financial information about offshore entities were revealed.
Does the big leak era signal that transparency has replaced fairness as journalism’s main paradigm? Does this mark the imminent decline of the journalism format and the rise of a new form of communicating information through interactive, opinion-based, interest-driven networks of corporations and individuals?

- NYU Washington, DC hosted a Salon Series conversation with Soraya Chemaly, author of Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women's Anger.
Rage Becomes Her details how women are angry, and delves into the constant tug of war women face between being underpaid and overworked, too sensitive or not sensitive enough, too dowdy or too made-up, and between many other extremes. Chemaly's work explores how women are pulled in all of these different directions and how rage is one of the most important resources women have. She argues rage is the sharpest tool against both personal and political oppression.
Chemaly details how women have been told for so long to bottle up their anger, letting it corrode their bodies and minds in ways they don’t even realize. Yet this anger is a vital instrument, a radar for injustice and a catalyst for change. On the flip side, the societal and cultural belittlement of women's anger is a cunning way of limiting and controlling a woman's power...

- A new method for simultaneous measurement of 71 inorganic elements in liquids—including water, beverages, and biological fluids—makes element testing much faster, more efficient, and more comprehensive than was possible in the past.
Researchers at NYU College of Dentistry studied samples of liquid from a variety of sources worldwide, including tap water from a New York City suburb, snow from Italy and Croatia, rain from Brazil and Pakistan, lake water from Switzerland and Croatia, and seawater from Japan and Brazil. Testing each sample results in a distinct elemental pattern, creating a “fingerprint” that can help differentiate between substances or trace a liquid back to its environmental origin.
“Because of this new method, our mass spectrometer can simultaneously measure all inorganic elements from lithium to uranium. We’re able to measure the elements in far less time, at far less expense, using far less material,” said Timothy Bromage, prof...

In Emmy Award winning director Gerry Gregg’s third film about Irish Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental, the 83-year-old continues his mission to tell the world about what happened to him and his family in wartime Slovakia.
In his journey across Europe, Reichental connects with Muslim refugees who have faced the kind of cruelty and persecution he remembers vividly from childhood.
For Tomi, their fate and the rise of extreme nationalism all across Europe evokes echoes of the darkest days of his life under the jackboot of the Nazis and their collaborators.
Gerry Gregg, Tomi Reichental, and American Auschwitz Survivor Irene Weiss will join in a discussion after the film.
