- Clay Parker spoke to NY1 about his experience as a former inmate in the New York state prison system. While he was serving time in Greene Correctional Facility, he says he was beaten by officers while he was handcuffed, suffering long-lasting facial and head injuries. He's not the only one who has faced violence from officers while behind bars.
In the last 18 months, New York state's prison system has seen officers accused or convicted of murdering two incarcerated individuals and a massive wildcat strike with thousands of officers illegally walking off the job. NY1's Courtney Gross has been examining that system for months and the violence that is endemic to it.

- How Hochul plans to lower your car insurance rates
- Date posted

- Description
- Almost three weeks past the state budget’s April 1 deadline, Gov. Kathy Hochul dug her heels on her proposal to change the state’s auto insurance system. She said she’s not ready to call it a deal until she gets her way on changes she’s proposed to New York’s auto insurance system. Proponents cited data showing the Empire State ranks among the highest nationally for the cost of car insurance. Hochul’s proposal has drawn sharp criticism from some members of the legislature, who are skeptical of promises that it will lower rates and provide adequate coverage for drivers.

“FIFA is anticipated to have about $11 billion in revenue over the course of this tournament, so I am continuing to be hopeful of ways that we can make this a more affordable experience for everyone,” the mayor said.

- NYC parents peeved by 2026-2027 public school calendar
- Date posted
- Description
- City parents are raising concerns over next year's public school calendar, which delays the start of classes until nearly mid-September and ends on a Monday.
The first day of school this coming fall will be Thursday, Sept. 10, with the last day of school set for Monday, June 28. Starting on Sept. 10 will extend this year’s summer break to around 11 weeks, up from about nine weeks last year.
The delayed start stems from the timing of Labor Day, which falls on Monday, Sept. 7 this year. Under state law and union agreements, the school year cannot begin until after the holiday — and teachers report for two days of preparation before students return.

A video shared by Ossé's office shows NYPD officers pinning him to the ground while taking him into custody.
“This is the result of deed theft and the ongoing displacement of Black homeowners in Bed-Stuy,” his office said. “Our office is closely monitoring this situation and will provide updates as this develops.”
Asked about the arrest at an unrelated press conference, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Ossé was “rightly passionate about tackling the scourge of deed theft,” adding that he would "follow up on the details of this arrest.”

- Why two schools could close on the UWS
- Date posted
- Description
- The DOE is making significant changes in two UWS schools, proposing to remove middle school grades at Riverside School for Makers and Artists and phase out grades at Manhattan School for Children by 2028. This comes two months after the Department of Education reversed course on the plans to close another middle school on the Upper West Side, where parents say they believe the reason was because of an alleged racist comment made by a parent during a viral Zoom call of a community education council meeting.
Officials cite enrollment and budget challenges for these two schools, yet parents worry about the impact on their school's unique models, especially for students with disabilities. A public hearing was held to address these concerns on April 13, with a final vote expected April 29.
Emma Barnett reports.

- Manhattan DA: We're trying to disrupt the "cycle" of shootings
- Date posted

- Description
- In a one-on-one interview with NY1's Errol Louis, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said his office is focused on disrupting the “cycle” of shootings.
"Something happens and - unlike in your or my day, everyone goes back to their block, now it's on social media and so it gets inflamed," he said. "And so really trying to disrupt that, either through our government resources and swifter cases, bringing cases more quickly, but also engaging with some of the community groups and crisis intervention folks who run to the fire,” Bragg said of their approach.
