- The clock is now ticking for building owners to come to a contract agreement with the union that represents thousands of doormen and other workers. About 34,000 union members would be affected by the strike that includes doormen, porters and maintenance workers at residential buildings across the five boroughs. According to the union, about 67% of the buildings affected are not rental units but co-ops and condos.

- Will Mamdani's city-run grocery stores work? | Off Topic/On Politics
- Date posted
- Description
- Last weekend, during his 100-day address, Zohran Mamdani finally shared new details on one of his signature campaign promises: city-run grocery stores. The first location is expected to open next year, with additional stores planned across the city. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, political reporter Bobby Cuza, and statehouse reporter Bernadette Hogan break down how these city-run stores would operate and what it could mean for New Yorkers navigating high grocery prices.
Meanwhile, Governor Kathy Hochul's new tax proposal could help Mayor Mamdani close part of the city's budget shortfall. The initiative introduces New York State's first "pied-à-terre" tax on luxury second homes. The tax would apply to one-to three-family homes, condos, and co-ops valued at $5 million or more, owned by people whose primary residence is outside the five boroughs.

- The 150-year-old origin story behind baseball's seventh-inning stretch
- Date posted
- Description
- In a game rooted in tradition, one ritual stands out among the rest. At any baseball game, the middle of the seventh inning means it's time to get up and stretch. That story takes us back to the late 1880s in New York City. Brother Jasper did, who was the athletic director at Manhattan College, now known as Manhattan University. On one hot day in June of 1882 during a game against the New York Metropolitans at the Polo Grounds, Brother Jasper noticed the fans were starting to get especially restless. “And so he took a timeout in the game, and made everyone stand up and stretch,” said Brother Dan. And it just happened to be the seventh inning.

- Three decades of “Democracy Now!”: Amy Goodman’s fight for independent media | You Decide
- Date posted
- Description
- For once, veteran journalist Amy Goodman is answering the questions instead of asking them. The longtime host of the daily news program “Democracy Now!” is the subject of a riveting documentary, “Steal This Story, Please.”The film goes behind the scenes with Goodman, the sharp-witted granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi, as she navigates a media landscape reshaped by rapid technological change, corporate consolidation, and mounting political pressure on the truth.
Goodman joined Errol to discuss working with Oscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin to bring her story to the screen. She also emphasized the enduring importance of independent, listener-supported journalism rooted in the Pacifica Radio tradition. She argued that the media can serve as a force for peace, especially when it centers the voices of people closest to the story, rather than relying on distant pundits.

- Hochul and Mamdani pitch tax on $5M+ second homes in New York City
- Date posted
- Description
- Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed a tax on second homes in New York City worth more than $5 million.
Hochul called the policy a “targeted surcharge” on “homes that, in many cases, sit vacant for a large part of the year.”
“They're part of our skyline, but those people are not part of our city,” the governor said.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the policy would affect those “who can purchase properties and use them to store their wealth, to benefit from New York City’s real estate market, but not have to pay back into that same city that generates so much of that wealth.”
The mayor and governor's offices say the tax is expected to generate approximately $500 million in revenue. The city is facing a $5.4 billion budget gap.

- Description
- Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s chief of staff, Elle Bisgaard-Church, told Ayana Harry on “Inside City Hall” that the mayor remains committed to fulfilling his campaign promise of disbanding the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group.
Top NYC officials recently took a trip to Columbus, Ohio, to learn how that city works to deescalate protests using what they call a “Dialogue Unit.”
“The mayor is in regular conversation with his police commissioner, and our teams also meet regularly so that we can design something that is best suited to that commitment being fulfilled and not compromising any of the safety and protection that New Yorkers deserve,” Bisgaard-Church said.

- How will Mamdani balance affordability plans with $5B deficit?
- Date posted
- Description
- The 112th mayor came into office with a big smile and even bigger plans — those aimed at making the city more affordable for every resident, but especially working-class New Yorkers. “I promise you this: If you are a New Yorker, I am your mayor,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during his inauguration. And so from day one, Mamdani got to work. From filing a lawsuit against a landlord with thousands of building violations to filling a bump on the Williamsburg Bridge, no problem was off the table if it meant saving New Yorkers money. Mamdani’s affordability agenda gained momentum quickly, seeing a big return when he partnered with Gov. Kathy Hochul to provide child care for 2-year-olds.
