- Description
- A broad low pressure system touched off periods of rain with scattered thunderstorms on Monday. Many locations did not receive significant rainfall, but storms with over 1-inch-per-hour rainfall rates persisted near Rockford and Lansing, which led to higher totals. Areas near Rockford received over 2 inches of rain, and areas between Portland and Lansing received 2.5 to 4.5 inches. Moderate street flooding and ponding of water was common in Lansing. Roads in some low spots had water levels approaching the roofs of cars. US-127 near Saginaw St was shut down for hours due to deep floodwaters and clogged storm drains.
A total of 3.77 inches was measured at Capital Region International Airport, which breaks the record for the most rainfall received in a calendar day in August. The old August record was 3.39 inches set on August 27, 2013. This was also the 6th most rain received on any calendar day at Lansing. The record for rainiest calendar day is 5.47 inches on June 6, 1905....

- 19 January 2026 10 AM to Noon Radar of Lake Effect Bands
- Date posted
- Description
- A robust mid-level cold pool led to the development of robust lake effect snow ahead of and behind an arctic front. Robust mixing behind the arctic front brought 30-40 mph gusts across much of West Michigan and 40-55 mph gusts to the lakeshore. In combination with very small flakes from the bitter cold, widespread blowing snow was reported with visibilities under 1 mile.
This is the Radar look of the lake effect bands that caused some lakeshore ASOSs drop to ¼ mile at times. This caused The Muskegon Observation sites to have 3 hours of ¼ mile visbys, with only scattered winds reaching blizzard warning criteria. Conditions west of US 131 were treacherous Monday morning with a 100+ car pileup in southern Ottawa County on I-196. You can see that band on this reflectivity loop in between Holland and Grand Rapids.

Radial velocity (right) shows the component of wind speed toward the radar (green-blue colors and negative values) or away from the radar (red-orange colors and positive values). Also note the turbulent flow underneath the shelf cloud where the interface of inward/upward moving warm air against outward/downward moving cold air is located. The turbulent eddies that form here can look ominous but are not. The only danger here is from the strong downdraft "gust-front" winds and small, brief "gustnadoes" that can form on the leading edge of the outflow.Video by Mark Sekelsky.
