- This simplified model shows how waves add together to produce large sets of waves every so often. This wave activity can surprise beachgoers and is one way waves can sneak up on people. This process is a common amplification and suppression of wave energy. However, when long period ocean waves (periods of 15 seconds or longer between wave crests) reach a coastline they can interact with each other producing long time frames, up to 20 minutes, of smaller waves followed by a brief amplification period of several successive large waves.
For instance, think of waves 1-6 with wave periods of 19.8, 19.9, 20.0, 20.1, 20.2, and 20.3 seconds. All very similar, but when out of phase they result in the dampened wave activity shown in the animation. When they line up, large waves occur.

- A waterspout developed over Humboldt Bay Thursday, January 25th around 4:40 pm and moved through the Woodley Island Marina, dissipating only a minute or so later. Security cameras on the island captured the waterspout moving through the marina onto the island. Thankfully, the damage reported was minor. However, because the waterspout moved onto land, it technically became a tornado. This is the first confirmed tornado in the NWS Eureka forecasting area (Mendocino, Trinity, Del Norte, and Humboldt counties) since the Fort Bragg tornado on December 5th, 1998.

- A look at how clouds move at different levels in the atmosphere. The high clouds can be seen first moving from west to east with lower level clouds entering the picture moving from the south to the north. This occurred behind a weak boundary late in the afternoon and is a good example of veering winds with height. This is an indication of warm air advection, which makes sense since this was a very weak warm front. Directly behind this front pressure rose.
