- Potential for Sneaker Waves Sunday Afternoon into Monday (Oct 20-21, 2013)
- Date posted
- Description
- A distant storm will generate swell that will impact the Northwest California coast beginning Sunday and continuing into early next week. Although the initial waves Sunday afternoon will only be 2 feet high, they will have a 23 to 25 second period, which will result in a sneaker wave risk. Sneaker waves are large waves that seem to come out of nowhere. Sneaker waves can catch you off guard and quickly pull you into the ocean where survival is unlikely because of strong currents, turbulent surf, and very cold water. Sneaker waves come in as sets of larger waves, possibly with periods of smaller waves that can last up to 30 minutes. Remember, never turn your back on the ocean!

- Sneaker Waves at Big Lagoon Beach - Long Version
- Date posted
- Description
- Sneaker waves are large waves that seem to come out of nowhere. Sneaker waves can catch you off guard and quickly pull you into the ocean where survival is unlikely because of strong currents, turbulent surf, and very cold water. Do not be fooled by an ocean that looks calm. There can be 30 minutes of small waves right before a sneaker wave strikes. Avoid steep beaches, rocks, and jetties. Stay far back from the surf and do not go in after dogs that get pulled into the surf. Dogs almost always get out on their own. Remember, never turn your back on the ocean!

- A Sneaker Wave Moves a Large Log on Big Lagoon Beach
- Date posted
- Description
- Sneaker Waves are waves that can surprise beach goers by running up significantly farther onto a beach or over outcroppings than other waves. Sneaker Waves are preceded by lulls in wave activity of up to 30 minutes. Beach goers encountering Sneaker Waves can be knocked down and dragged into the ocean. With coastal water temperatures in the 50s, survival can be difficult once in the ocean. Large breaking waves can develop without warning so beach goers should watch the waves and avoid rocky outcroppings and jetties. Remember, never turn your back on the ocean!
