Activists attempted a citizen’s arrest of Southern Water CEO Lawrence Gosden in central London on Tuesday morning.
The Citizen’s Arrest Network said the company has pumped “sewage into our rivers and seas for over 1,126,838 hours between 2020 and 2024”.
The for-profit company has previously been fined for deliberately dumping raw sewage into the sea. Earlier this month, it apologised after what it called a mechanical failure at a sewage works caused a catastrophic spill of plastic bio-beads that polluted the Sussex coastline.
“Lawrence Gosden pays himself millions of pounds to poison our water and raise our bills,” said Isabel Rock, who took part in Tuesday’s action. “Fines are not enough anymore. Privatisation hasn’t worked.”

Today’s demonstration, organised by Defend Our Juries, kicks off two weeks of protests organised around the High Court challenge to Palestine Action’s proscription on 25 November.
It was attended by around 50 people, who were at least equally matched by a heavy presence from West Yorkshire police.
At 1pm, seated protesters - most of them elderly women - unveiled their signs. Groups of ten or more police officers then began to arrest and carry away the protesters - including a disabled woman in a wheelchair.
Under UK law, non-violent direct action group Palestine Action is currently proscribed as a terrorist organisation, and showing support for or being a member of the group is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

"This is extreme, this is inhumane and it is a government of cowards," he said.
"They went for the pensioners, they went for the disabled, and now they're going for people who are fleeing war and conflict."
