- Palestinian Football Association president Jibril Rajoub has refused to shake hands with Israel’s representative at the Fifa congress on April 30.
Susan Shalabi, the Palestinian FA vice-president, told Reuters that Rajoub said: “I cannot shake the hand of someone the Israelis have brought to whitewash their fascism and genocide. We are suffering.”
Fifa boss Gianni Infantino had urged the two representatives to shake hands to “give hope to the children” amid “complex matters”.
Rajoub had just delivered a speech pleading with Israeli clubs to stop basing teams in the occupied West Bank.
“To be put in a position to have a handshake after everything that was said – this negates the whole purpose of the speech that the general [Rajoub] was giving,” said Shalabi.

In the footage, taken on April 28, plumes of white smoke drift through a residential area at the foot of a hill - before a mid-air explosion occurs and a new curtain of white smoke appears.
“The second round is an air-burst 155mm M825-series projectile that contains white phosphorus,” Mark Hiznay, associate director in the Crisis, Conflict and Arms Division at Human Rights Watch, confirmed to Novara Media.
White phosphorus is a toxic substance that ignites when it comes into contact with oxygen, and is capable of inflicting horrific burn injuries and setting buildings on fire.
It has some legal uses but firing it in a populated area or at civilian infrastructure is a violation of international humanitarian law.

New York City mayor Mamdani was speaking ahead of his appearance at a ceremony at the 9/11 memorial and museum in Manhattan, honouring victims of the 2001 attacks.
Asked what he might talk to King Charles about if the pair met, Mamdani said: “If I was to speak to the King separately from that [the wreath-laying ceremony], I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond.”
India has repeatedly sought the return of the 105.6-carat gemstone, calling it a "valued piece of art with strong roots in our nation's history". The diamond is currently set in the crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

- Labour peer Margaret Hodge said there was “nothing wrong” with Downing Street looking around for a new ambassadorial role for Keir Starmer’s disgraced communications chief Matthew Doyle.
Doyle was suspended from Labour after it was exposed that he campaigned for a councillor convicted of child sex offences.
On Novara Live, Zarah Sultana points out that Hodge, Labour’s Anti-Corruption Champion, held shares in a family venture partnership in apartheid-era South Africa.
“I think [Hodge] needs to find a new job,” concludes Sultana. “Perhaps Matthew Doyle can find one for her.”

- In the Commons last week, Zarah Sultana used parliamentary privilege to expose a court order that restricts reporting on certain aspects of a live criminal case, withholding important information from both jurors and the British public. On Wednesday night’s Novara Live, the Your Party MP joined host Steven Methven to discuss what she described as an “insane” attack “on all of our civil liberties".
“The fact that only Parliament TV, only Hansard, can report on it tells you what the British state is all about - and it is about curtailing our rights to organise, to resist, to challenge when the state overreaches,” she said. “I think it is scary.”
