Vijay’s TVK government has made a swift U-turn after facing criticism over its directive seeking to prevent students and youth from participating in protests organised by the CJP and Left parties.
The order, issued on August 17, asked schools, colleges, police and district administrations to coordinate efforts to stop students from joining such protests. A separate communication to government arts and science colleges instructed principals to prevent student participation and submit action-taken reports.
But within just two days, on August 19, the government withdrew the directive.
The CJP called the order “unconstitutional and irrational”, while the BJP backed the move. The DMK accused TVK of hypocrisy, pointing to the party’s youth-focused election campaign.

The chemical, Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide, better known as TPO, helps gel polish harden under UV or LED lamps. Great Britain has restricted new cosmetic products containing TPO from August 15, 2026, while existing salon stock must be phased out by February 14, 2027.
The European Union banned TPO in cosmetics in 2025 after classifying it as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant.
But gel manicures themselves have not been banned, and current evidence does not establish that routine gel manicures cause infertility or cancer.
Experts also point to repeated UV exposure from curing lamps, along with risks such as allergic reactions, nail damage and skin irritation.

A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 flying from Munich to Hanoi faced a terrifying take-off incident after its speed reportedly dropped twice while accelerating down the runway. With just around 91 metres of runway remaining, the pilots had no option but to take off.
Soon after departure, cockpit warnings indicated a possible tail strike and low tyre pressure. The crew turned back to Munich, dumped fuel and eventually landed safely after around two hours in the air.
Investigators later found that four of the aircraft’s eight main landing-gear tyres had burst, while scrape marks and damage underneath the rear fuselage indicated a possible tail strike. All 287 people on board were safe.
Investigators are now examining the flight and cockpit data recorders to determine why the aircraft’s speed dropped twice during take-off.

That question is now at the centre of a case before the Supreme Court after a Bihar Police constable fired four rounds from an AK-47 during student protests at JP Chowk in Siwan on July 25.
In an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, the Bihar government said the constable was surrounded by protesters and fired into the air to free himself. At the same time, the state also acknowledged that an AK-47 is a "platoon-level weapon" intended for special operations and not for routine law-and-order situations.
