India’s obesity problem is no longer confined to cities. Latest NFHS-6 data shows a sharp rise in overweight and obesity levels across rural India, with rural women seeing the most dramatic increase. The share of rural women who are overweight or obese has risen from 7.2% in 2005-06 to 25.5% today — more than three times higher. Among rural men, the figure stands at 23%.
The shift is being linked to changing diets, greater exposure to processed and calorie-dense foods and changing physical activity patterns. At the same time, high or very high blood sugar affects 19.7% of rural men and 16.2% of rural women, highlighting a broader lifestyle-related health challenge.

Former Congress MP and 1984 anti-Sikh riots convict Sajjan Kumar died on Thursday at the age of 81. According to sources, he was brought dead to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital. Kumar was serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail after his conviction in a case related to the killing of five Sikhs in Delhi Cantonment’s Palam Colony during the 1984 riots. The Delhi High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment in December 2018. In September 2023, he was acquitted by the Rouse Avenue Court in a separate case concerning the killing of three Sikhs in Sultanpuri.

An experimental gene-editing therapy called VERVE-102 has produced striking early results, cutting LDL, the so-called “bad cholesterol”, by up to 62% after a single intravenous infusion in an early-stage trial.
The treatment targets PCSK9 inside liver cells, aiming to create a long-lasting reduction in LDL cholesterol.
But this is still early science. The trial involved only 35 participants, and while the LDL reduction is encouraging, VERVE-102 has not yet been shown to prevent heart attacks or strokes. Long-term safety of a permanent gene edit also remains an important unanswered question.

- The Vijay government has announced 365 days of paid maternity leave for women government employees having a third child.
That is a major jump from the existing 12-week limit for the third child, effectively putting third-child maternity benefits on par with the first two.
But this is not just about maternity leave.
Tamil Nadu’s fertility rate has fallen sharply. Health Minister KG Arunraj has said the state’s TFR is now below 1.4, far below the replacement level of 2.1.

Andhra Pradesh is going even bigger.
