- Rain, rain, and more rain... that's what we saw last Wednesday night. And some discovered it wasn't only outside.
"My roommate was here and she called me and she was like 'Oh, there's water in our basement' and when she first discovered it there was probably like three inches," says Sarah Farmer, resident of 318 N. Sherman.
"When I came home the water was about this high on the steps and that was about at 11 pm," said her roommate. "And then by 7 in the morning when my roommate's mother got here to put the subpump in, it was at about the third step, right here."
Luckily no one was living in the basement and the only things ruined were some household items.
"Well the washer works now, but we don't know about the dryer," said Farmer. "The stove, the fridge are probably gone. All the carpet is probably really nasty."
The girls pumped all the water out of the basement on their own, because owners had over 25 houses with the ...

- Last week, Macomb received unprecedented rainfall causing nearly 100 or more homes to be damaged by the flood. Last night, the city council agreed on a deal with Waste Management to pickup these items with no limit to the amount.
"All that we would ask is that the storm material and the conventional material, be presented, be contained in a bag or a can of less than 33 gallons or less than 50 pounds in weight," said Dave Schabe, Waste Management Municipal Marketing Manager. "The big culprit here will be carpeting and carpet padding. As the contract already calls for, we'd like to see that cut in 2 foot rolls and rolls that are no longer than an approximated weight of 50 pounds."
Items that can not be cut down, such as furniture and bedding will also be picked up.
"That would all be included. If you can get it to the curb, the bulky items don't have to be knocked down to a container size or bagged, we understand that. As long as it can be handled b...

"It seems like Western students need a little help figuring out their Shakespeare accents. Luckily, I have a few tips to help you guys out."

- Readers from all over the community gathered at the Friends of the Macomb Public Library's moving "sale" to add to their collection of books. The district cleared out the libraries storage unit, and accepted donations to give to the libraries Campaign for the Future.
"No Prices, free will donation, and some people have been very generous. They've given us some big dollars and said, 'Here this is for the campaign'," says Becky Parker.
The libraries original structure was built in 1908. Since then, a children's library section has been added on, but it is time for the building to expand once again.
"The state said you really need a new library, and everybody agrees so we're all pulling together for that effort," says Parker.
The library will be receiving nearly 2.4 million dollars from the state of Illinois. The only catch, they have to raise around $800,000 by themselves before June 30th.

Staff at the Courier reported the incident to police to try to prevent this from happening again.
"I don't think that most people know that stealing the Courier is a theft," said Hodge. "It says on Page Two of our News section 'one copy per student.' We made sure to put that in there."

We attempted to call the number back, we attempted to use our PA system to get somebody in the residence to answer. No one was answering. We just don't have the equipment, so what

Residents were told to stay inside their homes while police attempted to make contact with the people they believed to be inside.

You may think campus is a little less crowded this semester, and that's because- it is.
Western Illinois University has seen a drop in enrollment over the last few years, and it's hard to pin point exactly why.
"If you look back over time, they do increase and decrease. You know, there's ups and downs and sometimes it's hard to answer those questions as to why," says Rhonda Kline, Director of Institutional Research.
While everyone is looking for a specific reason, the numbers are pretty clear. WIU's full time enrollment dropped 9.7% from 2005 to 2012. But they aren't alone. Eastern Illinois University and northern Illinois University saw a decline in students, also. But SIUC's percentage was the highest, at 11.74%.

- On Wednesday, February 6th, the United States Postal Service announced a major change to their delivery schedule: the end of Saturday first class mail delivery.
But not everything will shut down on Saturday's.
The offices will remain open and package delivery will continue. Just first class mail will no longer come to your doorstep.
A news release highlights some positives for the USPS.
It talks about cost reductions and savings plans.
Also mentioning, the USPS has seen a 14% volume increase in package delivery since 2010.
And, research shows over 70% of Americans support the switch to just 5-day delivery.
The release fails to mention the losses of the Post Office over the past decade.
While many believe email was the death of the USPS, William Polley, an Economics professor at WIU, believes another online business pattern may have hurt the postal service even more.

- As you're driving around town, you may have seen all those Go West buses lined up behind Hardee's. But that will soon be changing. Go West is getting an upgrade.
"This facility is 80-thousand square feet and we're in it by ourselves," says Go West Director Jude Kiah. "The facility we're in now is 10-thousand square feet and we share it with another agency that is a similar size."
Seven years ago, the bus system received a grant, and plans have been moving ever since.
"We are at substantial completion. We've passed that point. We're now doing punch-list items and we're adding, like you see here, the phone, computer, those types of things to the building. We're going to move into this building in the next two to three weeks," says Kiah.
The new building includes seven maintenance bays, an administrative facility, dispatch centers, and a break room for employees.
This new facility will be able house all 50 Go West buses indo...

- In 1904, the Macomb Public Library opened their doors. Today, more than 100 years later, they want to update and expand and they're asking for your help.
"We have earned a $3.2 million loan provided we come up with 25% of our share," says Melissa Inman.
The Campaign for the Future started in October. Local businesses have been very willing to help and the library is well on its way to reaching their goal of $794,000.
"This $10,000 gift that the bank has given us has put us over the $500,000 mark which is a tremendous accomplishment by this time," says Judy Kerr.
But businesses aren't the only ones helping the library.
"Children have participated, collecting coins and pop tops and this all converts to money," says Kerr.
If donations continue and all goes as planned, by this time next year this whole area here will be part of the library.
"The library is going to be essentially doubled in size with...
