- In the 1940s and 50s, Nebraska artist Doane Powell created a series of strange and wonderful masks. As a former cartoonist for the Omaha Bee, Powell eventually moved to New York City and shifted his focus from drawing faces to sculpting them with layers of craft paper and adhesive, creating exaggerated caricatures and realistic likenesses of famous figures. From Clark Gable to Mae West to Hitler, the masks range from playful to a bit spooky. After years of neglect, many of Powell’s masks have been restored and are now in the collection of the History Nebraska Museum.

- Description
- In 1962, homes and businesses in Nebraska received electricity generated by nuclear energy for the very first time. The Hallam nuclear power plant, known as Sheldon Station, was a demonstration project of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in partnership with Consumers Public Power. It was one of the first nuclear plants in America. Its unique design made it the first and only sodium-graphite reactor to work in tandem with a traditional coal-powered generator. In this episode of “Once Again,” we share the story of a power plant that was shut down after only two years, which could be considered either an innovative experiment or a technological failure. The remains of the reactor are buried just a few miles from the state capital. Now, the science behind the Hallam plant is being revisited as the Nebraska Public Power District considers expanding the availability of nuclear power with a new generation of small reactors.

- This special episode of Nebraska Stories follows the efforts of Nebraskans of Japanese heritage to preserve Scottsbluff’s Japanese Hall — a social hall built in 1928 that served as a hub for cultural, religious, and educational gatherings. At the heart of the story is third-generation Japanese American Vickie Sakurada Schaepler, whose determination, alongside many others, helped save this historic landmark. The program documents key milestones, including the hall’s relocation and archival research conducted at the Cheyenne County Historical Society.
Interwoven with the preservation effort is the story of Father Hiram Kano, whose life reflects the broader experiences of the Issei, the first generation of Japanese immigrants to Nebraska. From his early years as a farmer and community leader, Kano went on to become an ordained Episcopal priest before being incarcerated in an American internment camp during World War II. From the time the tracks were built, trains have moved goods across America around the clock – traveling through big cities and small towns alike. But the history of passenger rail in the United States is not so cut and dry. People have long shown interest in hopping aboard a train, and in the early 1900s it was the only way to get from one coast to the other. Through the middle of the century, a trip by rail was viewed as glamorous. But by the 1970s, the business turned so unprofitable the government was forced to take it over, creating the Amtrak service. Now, demand has once again increased for rail travel, with more and more people thinking of punching a ticket. In the 1920s, a Nebraska law made teaching German to children illegal. Soon after the law went into effect, Robert Meyer was arrested, charged, and convicted. Rather than paying a fine, he fought. Meyer’s defiance rippled through the United States legal system for years to come. He challenged the ruling, taking it all the way to the United States Supreme Court. This decision sparked conversation about which liberties in America should be guaranteed, and Meyer v. Nebraska has been cited in some of the most consequential court decisions of the past 50 years. Nebraska Public Media’s Bill Kelly dives into the research to explain how the actions of a school teacher in a small Nebraska town over 100 years ago is echoing through society, once again.

More than a century ago, one of the most popular horse racing tracks in America was located in Nebraska. Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha drew race fans from across the Midwest, flourishing in the state’s largest city. That is, until the 1990s when the track vanished. But how did Ak-Sar-Ben go from being the place to be to shuttering its gates for good? Nebraska Public Media’s Bill Kelly finds out, and explains how, now, nearly 30 years later, Nebraska voters have once again put the state in the horse racing business.
