- The town of Arthur boasts what Ripley’s "Believe It or Not" once hailed as the world's smallest courthouse. Erected in 1914 and operational until 1961, this compact structure measures twenty-six by twenty-eight feet. Within its walls, visitors can explore an array of artifacts dating back to the 1920s. Adjacent to the courthouse stands a tiny jail, built just a year later using two by fours. Despite its modest size, the jail features two rooms and a solitary confinement cell, offering a glimpse into the town's early justice system. These historic buildings were the first government structures built in the newly formed Arthur County, officially organized in 1913.

Johnson is the mother of a disabled daughter and discovered that daycare operations in her community of Hastings do not typically take children over the age of 12, which means special needs children age out of daycare programs, which poses a challenge for working parents of children with disabilities, as well as for the children themselves. That’s when she created Our Place After School Care, an innovative non-profit where teens with impairments can come after school to further their academic studies and learn social and life skills. It’s the first nonprofit of its kind in Nebraska.

In the 1940s and 50s, Nebraska artist Doane Powell created a series of strange and wonderful masks. As a former cartoonist for the Omaha Bee, Powell eventually moved to New York City and shifted his focus from drawing faces to sculpting them with layers of craft paper and adhesive, creating exaggerated caricatures and realistic likenesses of famous figures. From Clark Gable to Mae West to Hitler, the masks range from playful to a bit spooky. After years of neglect, many of Powell’s masks have been restored and are now in the collection of the History Nebraska Museum.

The industry includes restaurants, hotels, destinations, activities, unique businesses, natural wonders, vibrant cities and off-the-beaten-path towns. But…what happens if you don’t devote time and resources to tourism and bring awareness to it? The sleeping giant stays asleep and the state economy suffers the consequences.
In “Understanding Tourism,” people who work in the industry shed light on the importance of supporting tourism. Nebraskans, whether they think so are not, are affected by tourism, therefore making it in their best interest to see it succeed.
