- The April Rain Outlook is so important since we have been so dry. The wildfire threat is increasing, and water restrictions and water shortages are becoming more widespread. We will start the month extremely dry, with some signs of more activity by the second week of April. Hurricane Season starts June 1st, and we may need to wait until then for a bigger break in the pattern!

A giant asteroid will be close to Earth on Saturday evening! The asteroid, called Asteroid 2023 DZ2, will pass right between the Earth and the Moon.
It will fly by at 28,000 km/h or 17,000 mph. The Asteroid is as long as an American football field and will pass over 170,000 km or over 100,000 miles away.
Meanwhile, the drought continues and the wildfire threat increases in the Caribbean. A few areas will see spotty showers this weekend!

- Extreme levels of droughts are now impacting: Belize, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, The Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Other locations are being impacted too!
Severe levels of droughts are causing water shortages. The Vegetation Growth Index is alarming poor. Not only is it hard to grow, but we could lose current crops.

- The hurricane season will get off to a fast start, thanks to an El Nino that isn't fully developed, and warmer than average water temperatures. The ingredients are in place to get a few named storms early in the season, or even in May, before the hurricane season officially beings (June 1 is the start). I'll monitor the weather patterns carefully, since we are just two months away from the start of the season.

- Record long seaweed is stretching from Africa, across the Atlantic Ocean, into the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. It is twice as long as the USA... 5000 miles long, or 8000 km! This sargassum continues to roll on shore, causing stinky problems!
Elsewhere, two significant earthquakes struck yesterday... one was in Costa Rica and another in Ecuador. I'll monitor for any aftershocks.

- El Niño means a big change in the weather pattern this summer! Typically, we could have an extreme drought in parts of the Caribbean, while it is active with rain in the southern United States.
The amount of hurricanes is usually lower in an El Niño pattern, but there are other factors too. Extremely warm water may balance that out!

The first front will arrive midweek, and bring a good chance of rain for Florida, The Bahamas, parts of Mexico, and Cuba. Then it will increase the chance of rain for Belize, The Cayman Islands, and Jamaica. I'll be tracking it for you closely!
El Nino is coming back! That will be a MAJOR factor in the upcoming hurricane season. I'll have the season forecast for you soon!

- Cyclone Freddy just broke a WORLD RECORD for the longest-lived cyclone on earth...32 days and counting. It beat Hurricane and Typhoon John back in 1994. It may hang together for days and days to come. My thoughts are with those in Mozambique, as this system makes another landfall tomorrow.
Jamaica had some rain! It wasn't a lot and not everyone had it, but there were a few showers yesterday. The rain chance gets higher next week with a front moving in. I'll keep you posted!

- A March front will move into the Northern Caribbean next week. That will increase the chance of rain for some of us! Spotty showers will be possible from Belize, to Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Puerto Rico.
Intense Cyclone Freddy (Indian Ocean) is now Cyclone Freddy and will become the longest-lived cyclone on record for anyone on Earth! Tomorrow will mark day 32 this has been a cyclone. It will make landfall soon (AGAIN!) in Mozambique with winds around 100 mph or 160 km/h.

- Severe Cyclone Freddy is the longest-lived cyclone on record! Freddy will actually tie the record tomorrow (31 days, tying Typhoon/Hurricane John from 1994 in the Pacific Ocean). It made a record-breaking track across the Indian Ocean, hitting Madagascar and Mozambique, and even brining rain to Zimbabwe and South African. It is hitting southern Madagascar right now with intense seas and flooding, and will make another landfall in Mozambique. Winds will gust over 200 km/h or 125 mph on Friday in Central Mozambique.
Elsewhere, sargassum (stinky seaweed) continues to roll up along parts of the Caribbean and Southeastern United States.
Saharan dust will be near Aruba and Trinidad and Tobago the next few days, before improving this weekend.
My thoughts are with those in Madagascar and Mozambique, still dealing with Cyclone Freddy.

- "Freddy" took a 4000 mile plus, 7000 km plus track across the Indian Ocean, hit Madagascar, moved into Mozambique, and now it is looping and headed back to Madagascar!

- There was a March hurricane over 100 years ago, and it was a strong one! In 1908, winds reached 100 mph or 160 km/h, making it a Category 2 hurricane. It impacted the US & British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Saint Martin, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Montserrat. There was over 8 inches of rain or 200 mm. The crop damage was devastating.
Right now, "Freddy" is making a comeback in the Indian Ocean. It will bring more rain to Madagascar. That thing won't die!

- The drought is getting worse, and dust is moving into the Caribbean. Water restrictions remain for many locations, including Jamaica. Some areas will see rain, mainly south of Trinidad and Tobago. With the dry pattern, water shortages will only get worse and cause issues with agriculture. I will monitor the situation closely.
EARTHQUAKE: There was an earthquake early this morning north of Anguilla and Saint Martin. It was a 4.5 magnitude, in the Atlantic. There was no tsunami threat.

- When will it rain across the Caribbean? The dry pattern is locked in BUT that pattern will break down in two weeks. In the short-term, only isolated showers will be around. It will stay wet, however, in Guyana and Suriname. By early to mid-March, we'll see a more active pattern with at least the chance of scattered showers.
Severe Tropical Storm Freddy is moving into Mozambique. It will also bring rain to South African. I'll monitor it for you.

- Cyclone Freddy made landfall in central Madagascar with intense winds, coastal flooding, and flooding rain. It will re-strengthen once it gets back over water tomorrow, and then head to Mozambique and make a second landfall. It will impact the central and southern Provinces/Districts of Mozambique. Once it moves inland, it will weaken, but bring some rain to Zimbabwe.
The Indian Ocean remains active! Another area is developing into a cyclone in the central Indian Ocean.

- Intense Tropical Cyclone Freddy will hit Madagascar and then Mozambique. Winds are around 140 mph right now (225 km/h). It will impact central and southern Madagascar with major coastal flooding, high winds, and intense rain — on Tuesday. Then, it will impact the central provinces and districts in Mozambique — on Thursday.
Freddy crossed a good portion of the Indian Ocean. Right now, the worst weather is fortunately staying north of Réunion and Mauritis.
Freddy is the second strongest February Cyclone on record (Winston which hit Fiji, was stronger)!

- The Jamaican drought rolls on with more and more water shortages. Plus, an earthquake this morning stuck on the south side of the Dominican Republic. It registered as a 5.0 magnitude.
The next week, the drought will get worse in Jamaica. The rain chance stays low! Bigger cold fronts in The United States could eventually bring a better chance of rain next week.

However, on Friday, there was a 6.2 magnitude just off the coast of Guadeloupe. The epicenter was just west of Guadeloupe. It was felt as far north as the British Virgin Islands, and as far south as Trinidad and Tobago.

- A sub-tropical storm may form in the Atlantic Ocean this weekend. It is spinning up right now, and will be just north of Bermuda. The first name on the 2023 Hurricane List is "Arlene". Even if it doesn't get a name, it will bring coastal flooding to New England and Canada.

- A major storm system moving in will bring big changes to the Caribbean this weekend. The storm system is sweeping into California now, with flooding, high winds, and flooding. By the end of the week, it will move into the Gulf of Mexico, and then the Caribbean this weekend — as a "cold" front.
The winds will shift out of the north for many of us! I'll be tracking this for you each day.

A major winter storm is rolling into California, and that will bring us some cooler nights by the weekend and next week, across the Caribbean. Plus, the rain chance will go up in Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana again!
