- On this episode we dive into the archive for two programs on Maine’s wood harvesting and papermaking legacy. Log drives down Maine rivers were once a common sight but the last such drive in America occurred here in 1976, which is the year Maine Public produced this program, “The Last Log Drive Down The Kennebec”. It features some incredible film of the log drive, the steamer Katahdin on Moosehead Lake as well as interviews with people about what the end of this era means for the people and the community.
Then we go to 1983’s “Harvesting The Forest” for a look at the timber industry and paper making. This includes a trip inside the now abandoned Great Northern Mill in Millinocket to see how logs are turned into paper.

- Welcome to From The Vault, a celebration of 60 years of Maine Public Television. On this episode we take to the skies for two programs that feature ballooning in Maine.
Our state is home to a few historic ballooning milestones: the first successful transatlantic flight in a gas balloon began at a potato farm in Presque Isle on August 11, 1978 with the first successful hot air balloon flight across the ocean taking off from Sugarloaf Mountain on July 2, 1987.
Another first began on Sept 5, 1992 and that’s what we will feature in our first program. We will go back to 1993 for "The Great Transatlantic Balloon Race". Five international teams set off from Bangor for the first ever balloon race across the Atlantic Ocean. It was a daring proposition, with only five successful crossings having previously been made out of 16 attempts, with three resulting in death. You'll meet the people involved and fly along to experience the danger and magic of ballooning across an ocean.

Then we take an in-depth look at what was once the nation’s largest 2-foot narrow gauge railway with the 1984 program “The Sandy River Line”. With some incredible old film and pictures of towns in Franklin County, this show looks at the creation of the railway and how it brought prosperity and convenience to western Maine.

In our second episode we enjoy a bean feast with Cheryl’s bean and sausage stew while Tim visits the annual River Driver’s Supper in Lincoln, famed for their bean-hole beans.

- In August of 1779, the American Navy suffered its worst defeat until Pearl Harbor. 44 colonists ships were scuttled or otherwise destroyed in a failed to attempt to rout the British from Penobscot Bay. This episode of "From The Vault" revisits two programs from the archives that look at what is now called "The Penobscot Expedition".
The first program is "Penobscot: The Battle No One Ever Heard Of". Filmed in 1979, this program records the 1979 re-enactment in and around Castine. Along with the historical element, the program also looks at the re-enactment itself and interviews several participants.
The second half-hour looks at the resulting archaeological efforts to locate some of the ships in the Penobscot River and bay. 1977's "Sealog: Defence".

- We start with the 2013 special "The 16th Maine at Gettysburg" which chronicles the valiant efforts of the 16th Maine at Gettysburg. July 1st through July 3rd of 1863 saw the bloodiest multi-day battle of the Civil War occur at Gettysburg. On the first day, the 275 soldiers of the 16th Maine played a pivotal role in holding their ground to allow nearly 16,000 Union troops to retreat.
In the second half of the show, we will go back to 2004 for an episode of Home: The Story of Maine that will examine the disastrous Penobscot Expedition during the Revolutionary War. It was the summer of 1779 when 44 American ships sailed to Penobscot Bay to battle the British fleet who had recently taken control of Castine. The resulting defeat of the American naval armada is considered one of the worst, and least known, episodes in our country’s maritime history.

At one time, Bangor was known as the “Nashville of the North” and in the segment called “Maine’s Radio Cowboys” we will take a nostalgic look at the days when live country music was a mainstay of local radio and featured such singers as Hal Lone Pine, Gene Hooper, Betty Cody, Curly O’Brien and many more.

Then we will go to 1988 for an excerpt from the 1987 edition of the Maine Storytellers Festival from Rockport. This was part of a 90 minute special hosted by John MacDonald, another of Maine’s legendary storytellers. - In this episode of "From The Vault", we go back to ancient Greece for a retelling of the classic story of Psyche and Cupid with the 1983 special “Wings of Light”. The story of love overcoming obstacles such as witches, mysterious rivers and three headed dogs is brought to the screen in this stylized production. The episode is filled out with a few minutes of 1981's "Maine Stream Jazz", featuring a performance by the legendary Don Stratton and his band.
