- When it comes to raging wildfires, Maine is no California. As the most heavily forested state in the country, Maine's climate is wetter. California is warmer and drier. There's more lightning and more wind in the Golden State.
But Maine's changing climate is increasing the possibility of more and bigger fires — and now, like in California, prescribed burns are being used in York County as a fire management tool.

- For decades, scientists from around the world have been visiting a mature forest just off the interstate, about 30 miles north of Bangor.
They've undertaken groundbreaking studies on acid rain, forest ecology and soil health. NASA used it for a remote sensing project. And at one point the 550-acre Howland Research Forest was the most photographed place on the planet — from space.
On top of all that, Howland's best-kept secret is one of the longest, continuous records of atmospheric carbon and of the role forests play in the fight against climate change.

- Uneaten food makes up almost 30% of what Mainers throw out every day. Besides stinking up the trash, that’s a big problem for the planet. Landfilled food releases methane, a harmful greenhouse gas that significantly contributes to global warming. That’s on top of the energy and resources already spent to grow or raise it.
Altogether, food waste causes 8-10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, making it a bigger contributor to climate change than the aviation industry.
A growing number of Maine residents, communities and groups are trying to waste less food — and when not possible, to dispose of their leftovers in better ways. While many of those recovery efforts involve composting or donating to food banks, one fifth generation dairy farm in Penobscot County is taking a different approach: using a technique called anaerobic digestion to turn leftover food into electricity.

Paradise is the chief pilot for Currier's Flying Service, which has been calling the ice-out on the 40-mile-long lake since at least the 1990s. To make the declaration, he flies over Moosehead to see if there's enough open water for the steamship Katahdin to cross the lake, from Greenville to Northeast Carry.

- On a frigid winter day, University of Maine Farmington professors Julia Daly and Rachel Hovel load up their gear on a sled and head out on skis and snowshoes to Midway Pond near Saddleback Mountain in Western Maine.
While this area is well known for outdoor recreation, scientists are also beginning to learn just how ecologically important it is. And that’s why Daly and Hovel are taking samples here today. Daly is an associate professor of geology, and Hovel is an assistant professor of biology at the University of Maine Farmington, and they’re starting to document the role that these small, high elevation lakes might play as climate change continues to impact the region.

- Welcome to From The Vault, a celebration of 60 years of Maine Public Television. 1947 is known as “The Year Maine Burned”. In October of that year, nearly 200 fires burned throughout the state, eventually destroying 1000 homes and leaving 2500 people homeless. On this episode, we will look at the fire that ravaged Mount Desert Island for nearly a month, wiping out scores of homes, businesses and large hotels.
To do that, we will revisit the magazine show “True North” which ran from 1995 to 2002. The series had several hosts over the years. Don Carrigan, Patsy Wiggins and finally Peggy Keyser. - Welcome to From the Vault, a celebration of 60 years of Maine Public Television. On this episode, we spend some time on Maine rivers and lakes. As well as under and above in a couple cases.
We start in 2001 with the special “Flowing Past” that looks at the history and (then) current state of the Kennebec and Dead rivers. In that show you will see Steve Longley, who, until his retirement in 2007, operated the Appalachian Trail ferry service in Caratunk. Steve passed away in 2013. But we will revisit the ferry service in a 2020 segment that looks at how the pandemic had affected hikers along the trail.
Then we go back to 1998 for an episode of the magazine “True North” for what lies below Flagstaff Lake. Don Carrigan brings us memories of the town of Flagstaff, now beneath the lake after a nearby dam was built.
Then we soar above rivers and towns in northern Maine with a short from the autumn of 2019.

Bangor and Portland each had a "Union Station" for train service until urban renewal and declining passenger rail use brought them down. The once grand "Poland Spring House" along with Bangor's old timey movie house "The Bijou" are also featured. - On this episode we dive into the archive for two programs on Maine’s wood harvesting and papermaking legacy. Log drives down Maine rivers were once a common sight but the last such drive in America occurred here in 1976, which is the year Maine Public produced this program, “The Last Log Drive Down The Kennebec”. It features some incredible film of the log drive, the steamer Katahdin on Moosehead Lake as well as interviews with people about what the end of this era means for the people and the community.
Then we go to 1983’s “Harvesting The Forest” for a look at the timber industry and paper making. This includes a trip inside the now abandoned Great Northern Mill in Millinocket to see how logs are turned into paper.

- Welcome to From The Vault, a celebration of 60 years of Maine Public Television. On this episode we take to the skies for two programs that feature ballooning in Maine.
Our state is home to a few historic ballooning milestones: the first successful transatlantic flight in a gas balloon began at a potato farm in Presque Isle on August 11, 1978 with the first successful hot air balloon flight across the ocean taking off from Sugarloaf Mountain on July 2, 1987.
Another first began on Sept 5, 1992 and that’s what we will feature in our first program. We will go back to 1993 for "The Great Transatlantic Balloon Race". Five international teams set off from Bangor for the first ever balloon race across the Atlantic Ocean. It was a daring proposition, with only five successful crossings having previously been made out of 16 attempts, with three resulting in death. You'll meet the people involved and fly along to experience the danger and magic of ballooning across an ocean.

- Local chef Cheryl Wickson and Maine’s favorite humorist Tim Sample served up lots of locally sourced food in this 13-part series from 2003 with Cheryl’s take on some classic Maine dishes and Tim adding his dash of humor and visiting many locations where the food came from.
In our first episode, it’s all about blueberries. Cheryl will show Tim how to make a delicious blueberry crisp and more after he returns from a visit with a Downeast blueberry legend, Sanford Kelly in Jonesport.
In our second episode we enjoy a bean feast with Cheryl’s bean and sausage stew while Tim visits the annual River Driver’s Supper in Lincoln, famed for their bean-hole beans.

- In August of 1779, the American Navy suffered its worst defeat until Pearl Harbor. 44 colonists ships were scuttled or otherwise destroyed in a failed to attempt to rout the British from Penobscot Bay. This episode of "From The Vault" revisits two programs from the archives that look at what is now called "The Penobscot Expedition".
The first program is "Penobscot: The Battle No One Ever Heard Of". Filmed in 1979, this program records the 1979 re-enactment in and around Castine. Along with the historical element, the program also looks at the re-enactment itself and interviews several participants.
The second half-hour looks at the resulting archaeological efforts to locate some of the ships in the Penobscot River and bay. 1977's "Sealog: Defence".

- On this episode we celebrate Maine’s French Acadian heritage with two programs from the archives.
First, we will go to 1973 for an episode of the French Acadian series “A Time To Live”. Here we spend time at “Van Buren Days”, a festival to celebrate Acadian history and culture. In the second half of the show, we go to 1980 for “The Story of the Acadians”. We’ll examine their history and what it means to be an Acadian by exploring Nova Scotia's Acadian roots.
