Popular in Europe and the Western U.S., the sport of Skijoring combines aspects of horseback riding and skiing, large amounts of adrenaline and a high fear threshold from it’s competitors. They've undertaken groundbreaking studies on acid rain, forest ecology and soil health. NASA used it for a remote sensing project. And at one point the 550-acre Howland Research Forest was the most photographed place on the planet — from space.
On top of all that, Howland's best-kept secret is one of the longest, continuous records of atmospheric carbon and of the role forests play in the fight against climate change.

- Uneaten food makes up almost 30% of what Mainers throw out every day. Besides stinking up the trash, that’s a big problem for the planet. Landfilled food releases methane, a harmful greenhouse gas that significantly contributes to global warming. That’s on top of the energy and resources already spent to grow or raise it.
Altogether, food waste causes 8-10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, making it a bigger contributor to climate change than the aviation industry.
A growing number of Maine residents, communities and groups are trying to waste less food — and when not possible, to dispose of their leftovers in better ways. While many of those recovery efforts involve composting or donating to food banks, one fifth generation dairy farm in Penobscot County is taking a different approach: using a technique called anaerobic digestion to turn leftover food into electricity.

Paradise is the chief pilot for Currier's Flying Service, which has been calling the ice-out on the 40-mile-long lake since at least the 1990s. To make the declaration, he flies over Moosehead to see if there's enough open water for the steamship Katahdin to cross the lake, from Greenville to Northeast Carry.

- On a frigid winter day, University of Maine Farmington professors Julia Daly and Rachel Hovel load up their gear on a sled and head out on skis and snowshoes to Midway Pond near Saddleback Mountain in Western Maine.
While this area is well known for outdoor recreation, scientists are also beginning to learn just how ecologically important it is. And that’s why Daly and Hovel are taking samples here today. Daly is an associate professor of geology, and Hovel is an assistant professor of biology at the University of Maine Farmington, and they’re starting to document the role that these small, high elevation lakes might play as climate change continues to impact the region.

- Welcome to From The Vault, a celebration of 60 years of Maine Public Television. 1947 is known as “The Year Maine Burned”. In October of that year, nearly 200 fires burned throughout the state, eventually destroying 1000 homes and leaving 2500 people homeless. On this episode, we will look at the fire that ravaged Mount Desert Island for nearly a month, wiping out scores of homes, businesses and large hotels.
To do that, we will revisit the magazine show “True North” which ran from 1995 to 2002. The series had several hosts over the years. Don Carrigan, Patsy Wiggins and finally Peggy Keyser. - Welcome to From the Vault, a celebration of 60 years of Maine Public Television. On this episode, we spend some time on Maine rivers and lakes. As well as under and above in a couple cases.
We start in 2001 with the special “Flowing Past” that looks at the history and (then) current state of the Kennebec and Dead rivers. In that show you will see Steve Longley, who, until his retirement in 2007, operated the Appalachian Trail ferry service in Caratunk. Steve passed away in 2013. But we will revisit the ferry service in a 2020 segment that looks at how the pandemic had affected hikers along the trail.
Then we go back to 1998 for an episode of the magazine “True North” for what lies below Flagstaff Lake. Don Carrigan brings us memories of the town of Flagstaff, now beneath the lake after a nearby dam was built.

- From 1994, these two specials focus on buildings and attractions that are no longer around. Bangor and Portland each had a "Union Station" for train service until urban renewal and declining passenger rail use brought them down. The once grand "Poland Spring House" along with Bangor's old timey movie house "The Bijou" are also featured. Then we go back to 1976 for a visit to the sentry dog training facility. We skip ahead to 2014 for a visit back to the sentry dog facility to see how a local Eagle Scout is rehabilitating the long forgotten dog cemetery. We end with the bonus item "Assignment In Aroostook". A 1959 orientation film shown to service members and their families who had been assigned to Loring. It features many images of the area, trains and the base.
