- Today the Vintage Faire Mall in Modesto, California kicked off the 2013 Christmas Holiday Season with a special breakfast with Santa Claus, complete with arts and crafts, and teddy bears for every child who attended.
The event, hosted by DJ Walker from KAT Country 103.3 FM, was a big hit with the families who attended, and everyone left with a smile.

- Yesterday morning at around 8:30 am an alert police officer with the Modesto Police Department spotted a stolen vehicle being driven in the downtown area of Modesto, California.
The police officer called for backup and attempted a felony traffic stop on the car being driven by one male suspect.
The suspect refused to yield and began a high-speed chase through the streets.
The suspect crashed the stolen car on Alice Ave. near College Ave., got out of the car, and ran into the neighborhood jumping over fences.
Police formed a perimeter and began a yard-to-yard search for the suspect with the aid of a Stanislaus County Sheriff's K-9 unit and helicopter unit.
Police searched the neighborhood for about an hour but were not able to find the suspect. He remains at large.

- Yesterday afternoon the Modesto Regional Fire Authority was dispatched to a house on Thrasher Ave. in Modesto, California for reports that it was on fire.
When the crews arrived on the scene they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building. They set up and attacked the fire that was burning in an outbuilding behind the residence.
The fire reached the rear of the occupied home before firefighters could stop the spread. Firefighters were able to save the house from being destroyed and kept the damage to a minimal level.

- Yesterday morning at around 10:45 am the Modesto Regional Fire Authority and the Modesto Police Department were dispatched to the corner of Palisade Ave. and Yorkton Ave. for reports that a person had crashed a car into a house.
Fire crews arrived on the scene first and when they did they found that both the house and the vehicle were unoccupied. They shut off the utilities and checked the house's structural integrity.
While they were checking the house the driver of the car walked back to the scene and identified herself to the fire crew.
Firefighters checked her for injuries and called an ambulance to the scene. She was transported from the scene to an area hospital with minor injuries.
Officers with the Modesto Police Department met the driver at the hospital to continue their investigation. Police did confirm that there is a DUI investigation underway but, did not confirm if the driver had been charged with a crime. We will updat...

- This evening at around 5:30 pm the Modesto Police Department responded to a report that a man and a woman were found dead inside a home 1905 Monticello Ave. in Modesto, California.
Police have confirmed that there are indeed a man and a woman who were killed in the home. There are unconfirmed reports that at least one of the victims was shot.
Police are still in the very early stages of the investigation and have not confirmed any other information. Police are expected to issue a press release in the coming hours. We will update you when more information is released.

- This morning at around 8:45 a.m. the Modesto Police Department received several phone calls reporting two men fighting on Roseburg Ave. near Carver Rd. in Modesto, California.
While police were on their way to the scene more calls came into dispatch reporting that there was a handgun on the ground near the men, and that one of the men was bleeding from the head.
When police arrived they found the two men fighting and brought the situation under control without further incident.
Upon further investigation they found that the man who was bleeding from the head was the victim of an apparent attempted armed robbery, and that the gun on the ground was brandished by the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and the firearm was booked into evidence. The gun had not been fired during the incident.

Here are a few points of interest that we found out:
With the addition of a 3rd High School Football Stadium there will no longer be football on Thursday nights as there has been in the past. All Junior Varsity and Varsity games will be played on Friday nights.
Tickets for the league are $6- for adults and $4- for students.
All games have food and souvenirs available for purchase.
The season is 10 weeks long with 2 weeks down so far.
At the end of the season the top 3 teams compete in a post season playoff series against other leagues in California.

- The Modesto Police Department arrested a man this week charging him with the murder of his own parents.
On August 8th firefighters found the bodies of David Scott Pettit and Janet Pettit after responding to the home to fight a fire.
Police now believe that the fire was part of a coverup and that their son Brandon Pettit along with an accomplice Felix Valverde are to blame.
ModestoNews.org spoke with some friends of the victims at a memorial last week.
The investigation is still on going and the Modesto Police Department is asking anyone with any information about this crime to contact them.

- Early this morning just after 4:00 a.m. 911 Operators began receiving multiple calls of one or more people firing off several rounds from a gun, out in the open, in the middle of the Windmere Apartment Complex at 2717 Roeding Rd. in Ceres, California. Police also received a report that a person had been shot during the shooting.
Police from all over Ceres rushed to the scene along with firefighters and medics who staged about a block down.
Police conducted a search for a suspect or suspects in the complex and found none. They also were unable to locate a shooting victim.
After the medics and firefighters were cleared to leave police stayed on the scene conducting several witness interviews and collecting evidence.

- Early this morning just after 3:00 a.m. the Modesto Regional Fire Authority was dispatched to a house on Divan Ct. in Modesto, California after getting reports of a fire from neighbors.
When crews arrived on the scene they found the house on fire and set to work fighting it. They were able to bring the fire under control in about 15 minutes.
Looking at the front of the house there is little sign that their had been a fire at the home and from the outside it would seem that the damage would have been minor. However, during the fire fight firefighters found two people, a man and a woman dead in an upstairs bedroom room where the fire had been. Both the man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene.

- This afternoon the residents of 929 Roselawn Ave. in Modesto, California called 911 to report a fast moving brush fire up against their fence line, in the rear of the houses on the street.
Firefighters with the Modesto Regional Fire Authority were dispatched to the scene to fight the fire and save the homes.
Two Engine Companies, a Brush Fire Truck, a Truck Company, and two Chief Officers responded to the scene in time to stop the fire just as it began to burn the fences behind the homes.
None of the homes were damaged by the fire however, several large sections of the backyard fences were destroyed.
During the fire fight, firefighters had to advise more than one resident to put down their garden hoses and leave the area as they continued to try and fight the fire themselves, even after the crews were on the scene.

- Yesterday afternoon at around 2:00 p.m. the Modesto Police Department got a call from a man who told them he was the victim of a strong-arm robbery.
The man stated that he had been washing his car at the do-it-yourself car wash on N. Carpenter Rd. just north of Kansas Ave. when he was approached by a man who brandished a handgun and then demanded the man's wallet, and wristwatch.
The victim of the robbery first refused to hand his property over. At that point the suspect hit the victim in the face with his free hand. After that the victim handed over his property.
The suspect then approached a second victim at the same location and attempted to rob him as well. The second victim began to fight back and the suspect fled the scene running across the street to the Crossroad Shopping Center at 901 N. Carpenter Rd.

- In 1997 a Modesto, California Landlord was arrested and charged with 3 counts of First Degree Murder and Arson for the deaths of 30-year-old Michelle Jones and her two children, 3-year-old Amanda and 6-year-old Daniel Jr.
The first trial ended in a deadlocked jury. George Souliotes was tried again in 2000 and was convicted of the charges. Having already been in jail since his arrest Souliotes was then transfered to the California Department of Corrections to begin serving life behind bars.
Within a couple years of his conviction a legal team known as The Northern California Innocence Project from Santa Clara University took on the case of George Souliotes, believing that he had been wrongfully convicted on faulty evidence.

- Late this morning, just before noon a pair of masked men entered the Farmers & Merchants Bank on Carpenter Rd. in Modesto, California armed with at least one pistol, demanding money.

- Early this morning at around 2:00 a.m. a police chase came through south Modesto on Crows Landing Rd. . Neither the Modesto Police Department nor the Stanislaus County Sheriff's were involved in the chase. The suspect vehicle was being pursued by officers with the California Highway Patrol who did not ask for assistance in the pursuit.
The car being chased had been reported stolen. The stolen vehicle was being driven by one male suspect. There were no other people in the car.
The suspect turned east onto Service Rd. and headed toward Ceres, California. At the intersection of Brown Ave. and Service Rd. the vehicle came to a stop after crashing into a stop sign and a fire hydrant. The CHP officers executed a felony traffic stop on the suspect and he was taken into custody without further incident. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on numerous charges.

- Today the Modesto Fire Department fought 3 large fires in the area. The first fire was a house fire this morning on Olivero Rd. The second fire was a large brush fire on Scenic Ave. While firefighters were still fighting the second fire a call came out reporting a house on fire on David Ct. in Modesto, California.
While some firefighters left the brush fire others were called in from other stations to fight the fire.
When crews arrived on the scene they found that the attached garage of the house was fully engulfed in flames as well as a car that was parked in front of the garage.
Firefighters set to work quickly and were able to contain the fire to the garage saving the rest of the home. No one was injured during the fire and the residents are expected to be able to live in the home while the house undergoes repairs. - Early this morning at around 2:00 a.m. officers with the Modesto Police Department moved in on a wanted felon at his home on Pine Tree Ln. south of Paradise Rd. in West Modesto, California.
The unnamed man was on probation and had over $100,000- in warrants for his arrest. He was known as a man who runs from police so, the Modesto Police Department called in for extra backup during the arrest.
When police entered the house the man fled running onto roof tops and hopping fences. Police moved in and the man ended up surrendering after being threatened with police K-9's while in a nearby hiding place.

- Last night at around 11:00 p.m. a man was driving a small pickup truck eastbound on Woodland Ave. in Modesto, California when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall at the intersection of Woodland Ave. and Graphics Dr., just west of 9th Street.
The force of the collision was quite severe and the driver of the vehicle was found by a passerby laying over the hood of his pickup, having been ejected from his seat.
Emergency Crews were called to the scene when the passerby dialed 911. The California Highway Patrol, Modesto Police Department, Modesto Fire Department, Woodland Ave. Fire Department, and AMR Ambulance all responded to the scene.

When crews arrived on the scene they could see smoke and flames coming from the rear of the house. As they set up to fight the fire they met a man and woman in front of the house who said that they were living in the home and that the house has no utilities turned on.

- This afternoon just before 3:00 p.m. Emergency Crews along with the Modesto Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Claus Rd. and Yosemite Blvd. for reports of a multi-vehicle collision in the roadway.
When crews arrived on the scene they found 2 cars and a pickup truck smashed together in a center median of the intersection, near the railroad tracks on the south side of the intersection
2 of the drivers were transported to area hospitals for emergency medical treatment with what was described as moderate injuries. Among the injured was a dog that was riding in the bed of the pickup truck during the collision.
In the footage firefighters can be seen checking over the dog. The extent of the dog's injuries are unknown however, a injured leg is suspected. The dog was taken to a veterinarian by the pet's owners, who were not injured in the crash.

- This afternoon at about 2:30 p.m. the California Highway Patrol along with Emergency Crews were dispatched to Yosemite Blvd. just east of the Santa Fe Ave. intersection in Empire, California for reports that a bicyclist had been hit by a pickup truck.
When crews arrived on the scene they found a man with serious injuries laying on the south sidewalk of Yosemite Blvd. along with the driver of the pickup, other people who were attempting first aid, and onlookers.
Although the collision took place within hundreds of yards of a fire station Emergency Crews were delayed by a slow moving freight train just feet from the intersection.
When crews did arrive on the scene they began advanced first aid and transported the victim to an area hospital. The victim was described as a man in his 40's or 50's who had "moderate to major injuries." He was alert and conscious when he was transported from the scene.

- This morning at around 10:30 a.m. The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department along with Emergency Crews were dispatched to South 7th Street in Modesto, California for reports of an unconscious person laying near the roadway.
When crews arrived they found that the injured person was the victim of a hit-and-run and was in critical condition.
Emergency crews began advanced first aid and transported the victim to an area hospital. We were first told by Deputies that his injuries were fatal however, in the Press Release that was published this afternoon the Sheriff's Department did not clarify his current condition. The lead detective on the case is a Homicide Detective so it is clear that the man is either critically injured or dead.
We have a few phone calls into the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department to find out the victim's current condition. We will post an update if and when they they return our calls.

- This evening just before 8:00 p.m. an officer with the California Highway Patrol initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle occupied by two men who were driving erratically. The men pulled into a parking lot on Palm Ave. near McHenry Ave. in Modesto, California. As The CHP Officer pulled in behind the car the two men jumped out and ran in different directions. The driver running south and the passenger running north.
The CHP Officer called for backup as he gave chase to the driver. He lost the suspect just south of the traffic stop.
Officers with the California Highway Patrol and the Modesto Police Department responded to the scene to set up a perimeter and form a search team. They were assisted in the search by two K-9 teams from the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department and a Truck Company from the Modesto Fire Department who provided ladders when needed for the search.

- Last night just after 9:00 p.m. the Modesto Police Department along with Emergency Crews were dispatched to Thrasher Ave. near Larkin Ave. in the Airport District of Modesto, California for reports that a woman had been shot.
When crews arrived on the scene they found a 30 year old woman in the street who had been shot twice during a Drive-By Shooting.
The woman was transported to an area hospital where she was taken into surgery. She is currently in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is still in it's earliest stages and police have not released any other details in regards to the crime including suspect information. If and when they do this video will be updated in the video description section.

- Last night just after 10:00 p.m. thousands of Modesto residents heard a loud boom followed by immediate darkness. They heard a transformer explosion after a power pole was struck by a car.
The crash happened near the intersection of Briggsmore Ave. and Coffee Rd.
The Modesto News .org crew was on the scene of another news story on Oakdale Rd. when we heard the explosion our selves. We were unable to leave that scene for more than an hour and because of that, when we arrived at the crash scene we were unable to get any information about the crash itself, or the condition of the driver as all the responding officers had already left the scene.
What we were able to capture on film for you was, the eerie darkness of a large section of our community, as well as footage of the electricians restoring power.
The last of the homes had their power turned back on at around 12:30 a.m.

- This evening at around 5:20 p.m. Emergency Crews were dispatched to the intersection of Floyd Ave. and Jasmin Ave. in Modesto, California for reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision.
When crews arrived on the scene they found an 83 year old on the ground who had been struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross the street.
Medics began advanced first aid at the scene and transported him to an area hospital. He is currently in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
The vehicle involved was driven by a Modesto woman who also had two children in the car. The woman cooperated with police and was aloud to leave the scene. Police are able to confirm at this time that neither drugs nor alcohol were involved. Beyond that they will not comment on the cause of the accident as the investigation is still in it's early stages.

- This evening at around 10:30 p.m. an officer with the Modesto Police Department stopped a suspicious man on foot in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Scenic Dr. near Rose Ave. in Modesto, California.
The officer asked the man several questions including, if he was on parole or probation to which the man answered, "No." However, when the officer ran the man's I.D. he found that he was a Parolee At Large (or parolee wanted back in custody). When the officer told the man to assume an arrest position the man ran from the officer toward the nearby La Loma area park bike trail and river.
Backup from around the area was called to the scene and officers closed in from all sides.
The suspect was captured within minutes on the north bank of the river. He was brought up the steep side of the riverbank and brought to a waiting police car.

- This evening at around 5:00 p.m. Emergency Crews were dispatched to Plaza Parkway near Sisk Rd. in Modesto, California for reports that someone had rolled their car in the street and that the driver and one passenger were trapped in the vehicle.
When crews arrived they found a 4-door sedan on it's roof with 2 people trapped inside. Firefighters used their tools to free them from the car. They were transported to an area hospital by ambulance for treatment of their injuries.
Both the driver and passenger are currently listed in stable condition and are expected to make full recoveries.
Officials at the scene said that they believe at this time that neither drugs nor alcohol were involved and they do not expect to issue any citations.
The road remained closed for more than an hour before the car was towed off. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Speed is expected to be a factor.

- Early this morning the Modesto Fire Department was dispatched to Tumbleweed Ct. in Modesto, California for reports of a house on fire.
When the first crews arrived they found a house with smoke billowing into the air and an elderly woman standing in front of it.
As fire crews started to work fighting the fire an ambulance and police were called to the scene to aid the woman. Although, she breathed in some smoke she was otherwise unharmed by the fire. Her home however did sustain significant damage.
Firefighters were able to stop the spread of the fire before it completely destroyed the house but, the kitchen and surrounding areas were severely damaged. According to authorities the house will have to undergo a lot of construction work before she can move back in. The woman is expected to stay with relatives in Modesto.

- This afternoon just after 4:00 p.m. the Modesto Police Department was called to Rogers Jewelry on Sisk Rd. in Modesto, California for reports that a man had just tried to rob their store using a baseball bat as a weapon.
What the man did not count on during his robbery attempt, is that Rogers Jewelry has two separate doors customers must pass through before entering the store. The interior doors are fitted with a locking system that is remotely controlled. Customers must be buzzed into the store through the second set of doors.
When the employees of the store saw a man with a ski mask on, wielding a baseball bat they simply did not buzz him in, and he was unable to enter the store.

- This afternoon at around 2:30 p.m. the Modesto Police Department, Modesto Fire Department, and AMR were dispatched to FLoyd Ave. near Oakdale Rd. in Modesto, California after dispatchers received reports that a teen boy had been struck by a car.
When crews arrived on the scene they found the boy laying in the driveway to the shopping center at the corner of the intersection, near the McDonald's.
Crews administered first aid at the scene and then transported the teen to Memorial Medical Center for further treatment. The identity and age of the boy will not be released as he is under the age of 18.

- Just after 1:00 a.m. today the Modesto Police Department began getting phone calls from the residents of Garvey Ave. in Modesto, California reporting that a man had just hit a parked car with his, before fleeing on foot down the road.
While some neighbors called in to report the crime, others called in while giving chase to the suspect. At least 2 neighbors began chasing the suspect northbound on Garvey Ave... one by foot and one in a vehicle.
At one point police dispatchers reported that the citizen in the vehicle had the suspect cornered in an alley way north of the crash site. Officers arrived within seconds of that dispatch.
Thanks to the alert and proactive neighbors, officers were able to find and take the suspect into custody as soon as they arrived without further incident.

- Just after midnight, the Modesto Police Department along with Emergency Crews were dispatched to Sylvan Ave. between McHenry Ave. and Coffee Rd. for reports of a car accident with injuries.
When the crews arrived they found two cars crashed in the roadway with one driver in the eastbound car and 2 people in the westbound car.
The driver of the eastbound car walked away from the crash unharmed while the passenger of the westbound car was transported by ambulance to an area hospital. The driver of the west bound car did not go to the hospital but, was arrested for felony DUI.
This traffic accident investigation is still in the early stages but, according to the initial reports: a car with two men in it, was traveling westbound on Sylvan Ave. when the driver lost control on a straightaway and drove into on coming traffic causing the crash.

- This afternoon at around 2:30 p.m. California State Parole Agents went to the home of a Parolee At Large in the 700 block of Badgley Dr. near Sunrise Ave., in order to arrest him on a new Domestic Battery charge.
The suspect is out on parole for an original Robbery conviction.
When the two Parole Agents knocked on the door of the residence the suspect ran from a side door of the house jumping over the neighbor's fence into their yard. The Parole Agents called for backup from the Modesto Police Department, before beginning the house to house search for the fleeing suspect.
Police arrived quickly and established a perimeter. They first entered the home of the suspect to search for any additional people who may have been hiding inside.
They then moved on to the neighbors house where the suspect was last seen. The homeowners were not home. Police were able to enter through a fence into the backyard of the residence and search the yard.

- Late last night the Modesto Police Department along with Emergency Crews were dispatched to the city park behind Rose Avenue Elementary School at the corner of Wylie Dr. and Muirswood Way in Modesto, California for reports that a car had just crashed inside of the park.
Witnesses told police that the driver of the car had been driving throughout the park in circles at a high rate of speed before flipping the car in a field in the middle of a grassy area.

- Late last night the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department was dispatched to a house on Terminal Ave. just south of Claribel Rd. in Riverbank, California for reports of a shooting at a very large house party.
When the first deputies arrived on the scene they found teens and young adults running in all directions, fleeing the area. Deputies estimated over 100 people were at the party.
Deputies called in additional help from other nearby agencies as they attempted to detain everyone they could. When other deputies entered the property they found a male shooting victim. The victim was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Deputies and police were able to apprehend dozens of teens who attempted to flee. There were dozens of others who willingly remained at the scene. After questioning all of them, they were all released. There is currently no one in custody for the shooting.
