- Description
- In 2002, a group of young South Africans, selected for their acknowledged leadership potential to scenario-plan the country's future, gathered over a period of a year to envision what the country could be like in 2020.
Thus, the SA2020 Scenarios project, orchestrated by the African Leadership Institute (AFLI), engaged young leaders to think innovatively about the future and to craft strategies that address South Africa's immense societal problems.
Several of the people who developed the scenarios are playing significant roles in society today. The purpose of the webinar series is to bring them together in Johannesburg to reflect on the scenarios, reminisce about their experiences, and envision the way forward as South Africa heads for the 2024 elections.
South Africa's trajectory does not neatly align with any single scenario outlined in the SA2020 project. Instead, elements of each scenario may be present to varying degrees within the co...

- The narrative of military conscription during apartheid is littered with traumatic memories of denial, repression, and disassociation. Even the mandatory basic training enforced specific ideals around masculinity, aggression, and violence. It proved to be an effective vehicle for state propaganda to penetrate the minds of young men.
But film-maker Matthew Robinson say his interest lay less in providing an historical account of exactly what happened, and more in how the seeds that were planted then have manifested in the new democratic South Africa. Many of these men are now in their 60s and 70s, having raised families, but very few are willing to talk about how that period shaped them as individuals.
The mandatory basic training camp would alter and shape over 600 000 white South African men who were on the cusp of adulthood, informing their political ideology, their ideals of masculinity, and indeed their perspective of the dangerous world into which they we...

So long after the recommendations of the Farlam Commission, there are few answers and even less accountability from a government, police force and mining company.
We travel from the Eastern Cape to Marikana to speak to those whose losses have only compounded since, and question what the lack of accountability around the impact of this historical event means.
