- Trump sends National Guard to Washington D.C., expands L.A. military tactics
- Date posted
- Description
- In an expansion of tactics started in June during immigration raids in Los Angeles, President Trump on Monday announced he would activate 800 National Guard troops in Washington, D.C. to help “reestablish law and order” and “take the capital back.”
“Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged out maniacs and homeless people,” Trump said at the White House briefing room.
“It’s liberation day in D.C,” he declared.
Trump, who sent roughly 5,000 Marines and National and Guard troops to Los Angeles in June in a move that was opposed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, is invoking section 740, of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, that places the DC Metropolitan police Department under direct federal control.

- There’s more to California ground squirrels than the holes in your garden.
- Date posted
- Description
- California ground squirrels pack a lot of grit into their roughly 12-inch frame (not counting the tail).
The burrowing rodents do epic battle with rattlesnakes. And last summer the critters exhibited never-before-documented carnivorous behavior: Researchers observed the squirrels killing and eating voles in a San Francisco Bay Area park.“
That was shocking,” said Jennifer Smith, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and lead author of a study on the finding.
But the squirrels might be best known for their homes. You know, those holes dotting L.A.’s parks, hillsides and home gardens. The burrows, which can damage crops and infrastructure, drive some people nuts. But scientists say they play an important role in the ecosystem, serving as a food source for numerous animals. Once upon a time, people used to chow down on them.
Now, “what we're seeing is the ground squirrels are doing the hunting,” Smith...

- Trump seeks $1-billion fine against UCLA. Newsom says ‘we’ll sue,’ calling it extortion
- Date posted

- Description
- Hours after the Trump administration demanded that the University of California pay a $1-billion fine to settle federal accusations of antisemitism in exchange for restoring frozen grant funding to UCLA, Gov. Gavin Newsom called the proposal “extortion” and said the state will go to court to protect the nation’s premier university system.
“We’ll sue,” Newsom said during a news conference with Texas legislators over California’s effort to counter a contentious Republican redistricting plan in that state.
President Trump is “trying to silence academic freedom” by “attacking one of the most important public institutions in the United States of America,” Newsom said, adding that he would “stand tall and push back against that, and I believe every member of California Legislature feels the same way.”

- L.A. raid tactics: Roving patrols or racist stops?
- Date posted
- Description
- The legal wrangling will continue over the ways agents decide who to target and the level of use of force they use for non-criminal enforcement. The government on Thursday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to lift the judge’s order.
Now other parts of the country are watching the events in California, expecting federal agents to target their immigrant communities, particularly in states with no judicial orders blocking them.
“We saw the videos, the images coming out of Los Angeles. We definitely thought we would be next,” said Rey Wences, with Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which runs a hotline that monitors raids. “We’re just waiting for the shoe to drop.”
The Times reviewed dozens of witness and surveillance videos, pored through criminal complaints and interviewed lawyers, advocates, bystanders and experts to understand how on-the-ground operations have unfolded this summer and where the points of contention are.

- Border Patrol agents raided a Home Depot in Westlake as a top federal agent warned, “We’re not leaving,” and posted images of half a dozen border agents running from a Penske truck through the parking lot.
As many as 16 immigrants were reported rounded up and arrested in what U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Greg Bovino called “Operation Trojan Horse.”
The early morning raids revived fears of more widespread sweeps that organizers had hoped would ease with a federal judge’s order, affirmed by a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel, that immigration officials cannot racially profile people or use roving patrols to target immigrants.

- Las Vegas is down on its luck as tourism drops. Why it’s kind of California’s fault
- Date posted
- Description
- Sin City is facing a summer swoon, and Californians — by far the largest tourist contingent, data show — are partially to blame.
Visits to Las Vegas were down 11.3% in June 2025 versus a year earlier, according to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Traffic on Interstate 15 at the California-Nevada border was down 4.3% over the same period, suggesting fewer visitors from the Golden State heading for Vegas casinos.
The number of air travelers into Las Vegas overall declined 6.3% over the previous June. In 2024, Californians made up more than a fifth of air travelers into Vegas, with nearly half of those coming from the Los Angeles metro area.
A demographic report from the visitors authority estimated that Southern California provided 30% of all visitors to Las Vegas in 2024.
Add it all up, and Californians could be responsible for a significant portion of the decline in Vegas tourism.

New York Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday that the shooter, identified by law enforcement officials as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, appeared to have a grievance with the NFL but ended up on the wrong floor of a skyscraper that houses the sporting league’s headquarters.
“He seemed to have blamed the NFL,” the mayor told the WPIX-TV news station. “The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.”

His staid superhero movie plays like a classic sci-fi where adults in sweater vests solemnly brainstorm how to resolve a crisis. Watching it, I felt as snug as being nestled in the backseat of my grandparents’ car at the drive-in.
This reboot — the third in two decades — is lightyears closer to 1951’s “The Day the Earth Stood Still” than it is to the frantic, over-cluttered superhero epics that have come to define modern entertainment. Set on Earth 828, an alternate universe that resembles our own atomic age, it doesn’t just look old, it moves old. - Complaint filed against Dodgers by Stephen Miller group over DEI initiative

- Description
- A legal group co-founded by Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff and architect of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, filed a federal civil rights complaint against the Dodgers earlier this week, accusing the team of “engaging in unlawful discrimination under the guise of ‘diversity, equity and inclusion.’”
The lawsuit, filed Monday with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by America First Legal, was first reported Wednesday by The Athletic. The Dodgers declined comment about the complaint, which also named their ownership group, Guggenheim Partners and the Dodgers’ professional groups for employees, such as the Black Action Network and Women’s Opportunity Network.
