- Description
- In Mexico’s Sonora state, a gold mine said to be worth billions slipped from its American owner’s hands and into cartel control. Desperate to reclaim it, he turned to a man with deep local ties. Confronting some of Mexico’s most violent crime syndicates would become the greatest risk — and test — of his life. This story was supported by the Pulitzer Center and co-published with Puente News Collaborative, a bilingual nonprofit newsroom.

- Smoglandia Pt 2: SCIENCE TO THE RESCUE
- Date posted
- Description
- By the late 1940's, Los Angeles had experienced several extreme smog days -- or "gas attacks" as they were called back then. Everyone had their eyes on wartime factories that had sprung up and were shooting black plumes into the air, but someone had a feeling that the cause might be something else. Arie Haagen-Smit, a Dutch professor at Caltech who would later be deemed the "father of air pollution," was technically supposed to be studying the taste and smell of pineapples when he first began to conduct research into smog. Through letters and interviews with Caltech faculty and historians, we piece together how Haagen-Smit discovered the recipe to smog, and how after he published his results, people weren't exactly ready to hear that their beloved cars were at the root of the problem.

- Federal immigration agents detained a man in Cypress Park on Tuesday whose toddler was strapped into the back seat of his vehicle, according to video shared with The Times. After two agents climbed into his car — along with their weapons — they drove off with the child as onlookers protested.
The 32-year-old man who was detained during the enforcement operation at a Home Depot was a U.S. citizen, according to an immigration lawyer who spoke with his family.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told The Times on Tuesday night that the man allegedly “exited his vehicle wielding a hammer and threw rocks at law enforcement while he had a child in his car.”

Fast forward thousands of years to the early 1940s, and the renowned artist Helen Pashgian, who grew up in Altadena back when the light around LA – once so radiant and cool – was slowly smothered by the blight from wartime industries that hurt her schoolgirl lungs and blotted out the once-glorious vistas.

Anthony Brown, in prison for life, wins a $1 million settlement against the county, while Leah Marx is promoted to the FBI’s behavioral science unit.

- Date posted

- The U.S. military exercise that shot live-fire artillery rounds over Interstate 5 on Saturday dropped metal shrapnel onto a California Highway Patrol protective services detail for Vice President JD Vance, agency officials said Sunday.
The incident occurred shortly after the detail had escorted Vance to the Marine Corps event at Camp Pendleton. The CHP said that the shrapnel was from an explosive ordnance that was fired over Interstate 5 and “detonated overhead prematurely, striking and damaging a CHP patrol vehicle.” A CHP motorcycle with the detail also was struck.
The shrapnel fell in an area where CHP officers were gathered to close traffic along the I-5 in northern San Diego County, which cuts through Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
