The budget speech is coming in the backdrop of an economic downturn spurred by the Covid-19 pandemic which decimated industries. Several factories closed shop, others downsized and an estimated 12 000 people have been thrown out of work since 2020. Inflation has also risen to record high of 6, 8 percent as of last December according to the Central Bank of Lesotho (CBL) as evidenced by massive prices of goods and services.
With the budget speech just days away, ordinary people in Maseru said the budget must be pro-poor and enhance social protection to cushion the vulnerable from inflationary pressures.
