- ‘The most decisive battle in the modern era:’ Breaking down Ukraine’s victory in the Battle of Kyiv
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- Over the first weeks of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces threw hundreds of armored vehicles and tens of thousands of troops into their assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, in an attempt to decapitate the Ukrainian state and gain a quick victory.
With a combination of clever strategic and tactical decisions, personal bravery of its forces, and the resistance of its civilian population, Ukraine managed to fight off the Russian attack and immediately end Moscow’s hopes of total victory.
In an exclusive lecture held in Kyiv in late March, John Spencer, U.S. veteran and Chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point, breaks down the decisive moments of the battle, which he calls the “most decisive in the modern era.”
The lecture was co-organized by the Kyiv Independent and the Borderlands Foundation.
