- BELL COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) - “Smoke detectors can save a place.” That’s what the chief at the Belton Fire Department told KWTX after the smoke alarm alerted his department to a fire at Miller’s Smokehouse in downtown Belton over the weekend.
“It was 2 o’clock in the morning, no one was around. If it wasn’t for the smoke alarm, we would’ve burned this building to the ground. It was the smoke alarm that saved this building,” Chief Jon Fontenot says.
Authorities say this is a great example for business owners to make sure their smoke alarms are working, as something so simple could be the difference between a partial or complete loss.
The building took on a good bit of damage, forcing the owners to close down temporarily.

Detective Michael Miller said he spotted a large splash in the water about 20 to 25 yards away. When he saw the person inside the vehicle in distress, he jumped in.
“I was questioning what I saw to make sure,” Miller said. “The person in the vehicle started shaking frantically, like get me out of here.”

- TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) - A Temple mother says her 1-and-a-half-year-old son was bitten multiple times by another child at his daycare on Friday, and that staff members were not watching the children when her child was bitten.
Kayla Cadena said she received a call at work from Central Texas Children’s Center informing her that her son, Santiago Muniz, had been bitten by another student and that the bites broke skin.
“I was at work and when I answered the call and she told me that she broke skin I stopped dead in my tracks,” Cadena said. “Breaking skin on a bite, it’s a lot of force.”
Cadena said staff showed her and her family security footage from a camera outside on the playground.
She said the footage showed no staff members near the children at the time of the incident.

- Jimmy and Janet Dorrell, the founders of Church Under the Bridge in Waco, announced they will retire from leadership of the ministry effective Easter Sunday, April 6.
The couple started the church in September 1993 after hosting breakfast meetings with people experiencing homelessness near the Interstate 35 underpass.
What began with six or seven unhoused men and women sitting in metal chairs beneath the overpass grew over 33 years — more than 1,700 Sundays — into a full congregation with small groups, a children’s Sunday School, a prison outreach, urban children’s ministries and global missions in Mexico City, India and Haiti.
“After working at Mission Waco for all those years and now Church Under the Bridge, we are retiring as of Easter and we are looking forward to a new venture in our lives together,” Jimmy Dorrell said.
Dorrell said the couple will remain members of the church and continue to attend periodically.

- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A federal magistrate judge has recommended dismissing the remaining civil lawsuit filed by bikers arrested following the 2015 Twin Peaks shooting in Waco, which left nine people dead and 20 wounded.
On Monday, Magistrate Judge Derek Gilliland issued a recommendation that former McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna and former Waco Police Department Officer Manuel Chavez be shielded by qualified immunity from liability in the lawsuit.
More than 170 bikers were arrested following the shooting that resulted from a confrontation between the Bandidos and Cossacks motorcycle clubs.
Former DA Reyna ordered the arrest of any biker wearing colors similar to those of the two clubs.
All charges were later dismissed by Reyna and his successor, Barry Johnson.
The bikers who filed the civil lawsuit alleged their civil rights were violated when they were arrested without probable cause.

Haile, now a senior at Hamilton helped lead the 2024 Bulldogs to what was then their best football season in school history.

During the game Haile took a hit that knocked him out of the game.

- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - In January, the City of Waco approved a nearly $10.8 million project to turn the city’s downtown railroad into a quiet zone from Peach Street to S 13th Street.
Trains normally pass through downtown every few hours, and the loud horns disrupt the surrounding area.
Autumn Outlaw, the Dr. Pepper Museum’s marketing director, says because they’re right by the tracks and they hear it every time.
“Oftentimes, when we have board meetings or meetings in our board room, which faces 5th Street, we have to stop the meeting because the train’s so loud,” she explained.

- SALADO, Texas (KWTX) - A statue of Robert Duvall as Gus McCrae in “Lonesome Dove” has become a memorial site where people pay tribute to the late Hollywood actor.
The sculpture depicts Duvall as Gus McCrae from the acclaimed Western miniseries and sits on Main Street in Salado. Artist Ronnie Wells, who created the piece, said visitors from across the region have stopped by to honor Duvall’s legacy.
“I feel so much gratitude that people seem to relate, through the sculpture, to the point they’re willing to come here and acknowledge Robert Duvall and his career. So, its flattering,” Wells said.
Wells has created art for more than 50 years and operates a gallery across the street from the statue. He said a Salado resident commissioned the sculpture after being captivated by another piece Wells had created featuring both Woodrow Call and Gus McCrae.

- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Candidates running for the Texas House District 56 seat agreed unanimously at the Hispanic Leaders Network’s Meet The Candidate Forum that increased transparency is needed regarding a proposed data center project in Lacy Lakeview.
The McLennan County project has drawn concerns from residents who worry about its local environmental and infrastructure impacts. All four candidates — two Democrats and two Republicans — emphasized the importance of answering community questions before moving forward with development.
Democratic candidate Ashley Bean Thornton said residents deserve comprehensive information about the project’s effects.
“All the way from, ‘Is there enough water? Who gets first dibs on the water if it runs out? Is the electric bill going to go up? What are we going to do about the noise and light pollution?’” Thornton said.

- Staff at the Ramsgate Veterinary Clinic were expecting their next appointment to be a cat. They got a shock when a newborn bull calf walked through their doors instead.
It started like any other day at the clinic. They were understaffed, overbooked and running a single-doctor schedule when the clinic received a phone call from a client who said he needed to bring his “cat” in for treatment.
Their receptionist, Courtney, told the client to bring the animal in. When the owner arrived, he asked Krueger to help him get the door.
“I walked out and looked in the truck. No cat, but there was a bull-calf sitting right in the passenger seat,” Krueger said.

- WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Two people were able to escape a house fire early Thursday morning thanks to their smoke detector.
The Waco Fire Department extinguished the house fire in the 2300 Block of Trice Ave.
The two individuals inside the home at the time were able to escape with their dogs and did not suffer any injuries.
“They were woken by their smoke detector. So if you don’t have a smoke detector, it’s a good time to get one and if you don’t know where to get one, call the Waco Fire Department and we’ll help you get one,” a deputy fire chief at the scene said.
“As trivial as it sounds, 50% of lives saved during a house fire were alerted by a smoke detector.”
The fire department said, unfortunately, the home will be a “total loss” because of the extent of fire and smoke damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
