Description: There was something special in the air at Zilker Park on Sunday. Massive crowds blew in to the Austin, TX park to take part in the longest running annual kite festival in the United States. The Zilker Kite Festival, created in 1923 to promote creativity in kids, has changed little throughout the years and still features decades old competitions -- steadiest and highest angle kite to name a few.
"My dad and I came here in 1968 to enter the smallest kite competition," said one seasoned kite flyer, "and I've been coming here ever since."
Revenue from the festival goes towards the mission of the Exchange Club, the prevention of child abuse and making the community a better place.

In 2009, Wanda Jackson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the encouragement of artists like Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen. Her newest album, Unfinished Business, was produced by Justin Townes Earle, and was released in October. Wanda Jackson will be in town this weekend, playing at Antone's on Saturday night. Click they did, and -- much to Klein's surprise -- My Jerusalem became an actual band. In October, the band released their second full-length album, Preachers. The band took on a darker tone for their latest release, a sound that Klein calls "Post-Modern Southern Gothic Soul." The album has been incredibly well received, earning praise from critics and fans alike.

Description: It's been one adventurous journey for The Couch since they formed in 2007. Back in the day, it was mostly about playing house parties in San Marcos, but that definitely got the ball rolling. Frontman and songwriter Taylor Wilkins soon made the move to Austin, where he, drummer Jud Johnson (Frank Smith) and bassist Kyle Robarge (The Calm Blue Sea, Frank Smith) made three EPs and worked diligently to redefine their musical direction.
These days, the band is tighter and better than ever thanks in large part to the addition of vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sara Houser. It was a pivotal move that paved the way for an even broader transformation of The Couch's sound and songwriting approach. After releasing a couple of new tracks last summer, The Couch has a new self-titled full-length ready, and they're celebrating with an album release party Saturday night at Holy Mountain, 617 E. 7th St. The bill includes performances by Royal Forest and Featherface.

Description: Cincinnati indie duo Bad Veins didn't set out seeking to be professional musicians, they just sort of stumbled into it. Frontman Benjamin Davis started out using the name "Bad Veins" for his solo act. His future bandmate, Sebastien Schultz, was in attendance at his debut show under the Bad Veins moniker. That early show had some of the current hallmarks of Bad Veins: the use of a telephone and a megaphone to filter vocals, and backing tracks played on Irene the reel-to-reel tape player. At the show, Sebastien talked over the music and left early, not entirely impressed by the performance. Despite the insult, Davis later invited him to jam, and the rest was history. Today, the duo has released two EPs and two albums worth of their indie rock sound, and have toured all over. Their tour brought them to Austin on Friday. While they were here, they took the time to stop by KUT and record a live session in Studio 1a. Check it out now!
