- Description
- Time is running out for the debt ceiling debate, and Austinites are watching. KUT freelancer Jeff Heimsath produced this video to constrast local opinions with those of a University of Texas economist.
Here's the issue: there's a legal cap on how much money the United States is allowed to borrow.
Right now it's $14.3 trillion, which the government says it will exceed by early August. To prevent this, the United States either needs to cut spending drastically or raise that ceiling. Otherwise, it means the U.S. will default on its loans.
That could mean people on social security won't see their checks and federal government employees could have to take furloughs. Congress has raised the debt ceiling ten times in the last decade.
President Obama held another town hall meeting at the University of Maryland today. House Speaker John Boehner is hoping to have a House vote by Wednesday. If that happens, Congress will be on track to...

An independent textile conservator, Cara Varnell is working on three of the dresses, including the famous "curtain dress" from the 1939 Oscar-winning film. The restoration work should be done by the end of the week. Center officials are still considering ways to display the dresses to the public.

Right there on the corner, as part of the College of Communication's Belo Center for New Media, you'll see the future home of KUT.
One of the things we're most excited about is that for the first time in our more than 50 year history we are going to have our very own electric generator! With this marvelous (and exceedingly large as you will see) generating powerhouse, we'll be able to stay on the air next time there's an unexpected power interruption here on campus. We're thrilled about this and we'd like to share that excitement with you.
Enjoy!!

- One of Austin's newest family attractions, Jumpoline, is taking the idea of a trampoline to the next level. First of all, it's indoors and air conditioned, making it an option for parents who want to take their kids out of the merciless Texas summer heat. Secondly, the trampoline is massive; it spans close to 10,000 square feet.
Jumpoline opened Saturday and is located on the corner of Wells Branch and MoPac. It's open from 10 am to 8 pm. General manager Lucy Kim said the hours will be extended once construction is fully complete.
Kim said she and her husband Jason Kim, president and CEO of Jumpoline, always wanted to have this kind of business.
"My husband is a general building contractor and he got this idea," Kim said. "We've seen some similar to this so we said, 'Well, it'd be a great place for the kids, or anybody who wants to get some exercise.'"
Jackie Coplin of Austin brought her kids to Jumpoline and thought it was ...

- In 1999, the City of Austin relocated the airport and eventually, a mixed-use neighborhood took over the old site. Technically its called the MILLER development, but lots of us—in honor of the spelling: M-U-E-L-L-E-R-- call it Mueller. You say Miller, I say Mueller, either way I think we can all agree that the decision to keep the old air traffic control tower intact was an excellent one. The tower, celebrating its fiftieth birthday this year, is being restored to its original glory, its upside down bell-bottom design once again sporting alternating checkered panels of dark and light blue.
When I moved to Austin in 1991, I arrived on a plane guided onto the runway by controllers in that old tower. I was toting a ten-month old, close to zero dollars, and a suitcase or two. I had no plan, no job, no idea where I would live and no notion that this city would become my permanent home. After neighborhood hopping as a renter for fifteen years, I finally bought a house. - Description
- Photographer Rino Pizzi's latest endeavor is a reexamination of Leonardo's Mona Lisa. Arguably the most famous painting in history, Mona Lisa has been studied, contemplated, and debated about so much over the centuries that Pizzi feels it's sometimes considered more of a subject of discussion than an actual painting. In an effort to look at the artwork with fresh eyes, he asked sixteen female artists to sit for him in the style of Mona Lisa's famous subject. The artists themselves (Connie Arismendi, Ellen Berman, Valérie Chaussonnet, Judy Jensen, Faith Gay, Germaine Keller, Emily Little, Beili Liu, Beverly Penn, Margo Sawyer, Nancy Scanlan, Julie Speed, Jana Swec, Liz Ward, Sally Weber, and Sydney Yeager) then created Mona Lisa-inspired works based on the photos.
The Mona Lisa Project is on display through September 11 at the Austin Museum of Art.

The televised celebrations surrounding the recent legalization of same-sex marriage in New York have once again put the spotlight on families headed by same-sex parents. It might come as a surprise to you that here in Texas, where a constitutional amendment has defined marriage as being only between a man and a woman, there are more same-sex parents than many parts of the country, including New York. In fact, while 22.8 percent of same-sex couples are raising a child under the age of 18 in the U. S., the figure in Texas is almost 27 percent, even without the legal approval of the state.
The Lutes-Stein family is one of the many headed by a same-sex couple in Texas. Married in the presence of their three adopted children on the first day that California legalized gay marriages in 2008, Jeff Lutes and his partner Gary Stein knew that, legally speaking, it was a marriage that would last on paper only as long as the family...

- Earlier this month Storyboard ventured out on a hot Sunday afternoon in search of "Norman Rockwell's America," and right in the heart of the Texas Hill Country we found exactly that at the Blanco Lavender Festival.
"It's a big thing for Blanco," said Francis Richie as she cooled off with a glass of lavender lemonade at the Hill Country Lavender Farm. "Blanco is not just Blanco, it's not just a little city...It's really people's hearts and souls and everything that goes into all this."
Blanco, Texas is about 50 miles southwest of Austin and for the 7th year in a row they opened up their delightful lavender farms and set up tents and booths in the town square for the Lavender Festival. You can sip lavender champagne, sample delicious food, dance to live music, and purchase a wide variety of arts and crafts as well as culinary delights.

- A chilling howl breaks the silence of the night and the full-throated yelps of a chorus of werewolves, oops, Austinites, soon follows. At the Full Moon Party, that happens at Barton Springs Pool at the climax of every lunar cycle, you'll find hipsters, teenagers, middle-aged men and women, lovers, and parents with kids gathering to celebrate Mother Nature's monthly event. This is one way people beat the summer heat as they bathe in the essence of Austin and of course, howl at the magical full moon. It starts at 9, when the pool stops charging admission and the moon is about to rise above the city's skyline.
We hope you enjoy this video that captures one of those weird and fun scenes that helps make Austin special. Maybe next time when the moon is full, you may add your voice to the howling chorus that serenades one of Mother Nature's most magnificent creations.

- Views and Brews: Conversations at the Cactus Cafe is the place for lively discussion and this time around we also shared some great music. During our conversation, centered on the role of jazz during the Cold War, rabbi Neil Blumofe and KUT's Jay Trachtenberg shed some light on how this great American art form was used as a diplomatic tool during this unique global conflict. They shared some interesting stories about a few of the great jazz musicians and the part they played in the U.S. State Department's sponsorship of international jazz tours in the '50s and '60's. We also heard some amazing music from Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington and more.
"Improvising is the stuff of life," said rabbi Blumofe. "To perform jazz as an ambassador of the State Department during the Cold War converges many things into an uncomfortable cluster, raising questions about purpose, narrative, nationalism, and autonomy. What does it mean to create art and fire up a soul for the expectations of a...

- Funeral services have been held in Burnet for Private First Class Anthony Nunn.
The 19-year old was killed last week while serving in Afghanistan. Nunn is the second Burnet soldier to be killed in Afghanistan in the past year.
Mike Lewis, the former band director at Burnet High School, remembers Nunn as "a good trombone player." "He wasn't great, but nobody would work harder," Lewis said.
Anthony Nunn graduated just last year. Lewis says he and the rest of the band could count on Nunn, who was known as "Tamale" to his friends, to do just about anything.
"He was a little bit smaller in stature, and so if there was something that we needed to get off the equipment truck with it fully loaded -- in went Tamale -- and he'd go crawling in around equipment, grab this thing and come out with it," said Lewis.
Anthony Nunn only lived in Burnet for a few years, but he made an impression. It was a tight community among the ...

- Six years ago Louis Singh was sitting in a cubical feeling unfulfilled in his job at a non-profit organization in Austin, Texas. He checked Craigslist for other possibilities and there he found an ad for a job in the catering department of P&K Grocery, a small grocery store that was about to open in Austin. This resonated with him and he applied for the job, yet having no prior experience on paper as a chef his prospects seemed limited.
"At that point I had really no experience cooking in a professional kitchen," Louis said, " but I was immersed in it. I would watch, read and talk to people about cooking as much as I could."
He got a job slicing meats in the deli of P&K and within a few months he was managing the catering department. In April of 2008 the store closed and he started his own catering company with some friends.

- El Paso, Texas might be the last place you'd expect to find a heavy South Asian cultural influence, but the architecture at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) was actually inspired by the ancient architecture of Bhutan, a small landlocked country nestled between India, and China.
"When I visited the campus of UTEP, there weren't many people who knew why the architecture looks the way it does," Lisa Napoli, a journalist and author of Radio Shangrila: What I Learned In Bhutan, the Happiest Kingdom on Earth, told KUT News.
"I've been meeting people who were from El Paso, or who had friends from El Paso or relatives, and had no idea why UTEP looks the way it does," she said.
Napoli says, however, that many people on the campus are big advocates of the connection between UTEP and Bhutan, and the number of Bhutanese students at UTEP has increased in recent years.
