Beyond just the skills they learn, camp coordinator Vince Tutiakoff hopes to instill some traditional values in students as well.
"We teach Aleut values which we think are important to having a good life and being a good person," he says. "Sharing, taking care of each other, helping each other."
And he sees students make progress in more than just their ability to skin a seal.
"They change within a week," he says. "By the end of the week they're respectful, they're not as roudy, they're paying attention... they really want to learn something."

- Description
- The students at Alaska Teen Media Institute get a chance to produce all kinds of media, from radio and audio to web design and video. The organization provides them with the tools and experienced mentors to help them learn the skills they need.
But it's about more than just media production skills says Rosey Robards, the organization's Director. It's also about giving students a voice. One of her goals is for the students' media to "have a place to go." Public media has played a big part in providing a venue for the students work.
Assistant Director Robert Stormo agrees that it goes beyond the hands-on skills the students learn.
"We want them to be successful media producers, obviously, but we want them to also be successful individual regardless of their career path," he says. "We're giving them skills that are applicable in other fields as well."

- Description
- Technology is changing the face of education, and Dr. Lee Graham is on the forefront of that change. She helps teachers use the video game Minecraft to connect with students in new ways.
"The special opportunity that teachers have in using Minecraft in the classroom is to capture that engagement that students feel when they play it," she says.
Minecraft is a virtual world where students can build almost anything they can imagine using different materials and tools. The flexibility of the game means that teachers can use it in any number of ways to fit their curriculum.
One of Graham's students, Cynthia Duncan, is using the game to teach her second grade students about life in a native village. They meticulously reconstructed a traditional Tlingit clan house inside the game.
"Combining the old with the new in a powerful way," she says. "Really feeding on children's motivations and interests."
That's the biggest differen...

- 100 Years of the Alaska Native Sisterhood - Forum@360
- Date posted
- Description
- The Alaska Native Sisterhood celebrates its 100th anniversary in October. The Sisterhood began as an auxillary of the Alaska Native Brotherhood, which had been founded three years earlier in 1912. However, women’s organizations did exist in Southeast previous to the founding of the ANS, but many of them eventually organized under the Sisterhood, establishing their own camps.
It was an ANS member, Elizabeth Peratrovich, who famously admonished a territorial senator who spoke disparagingly of Alaska Natives. Peratrovich worked tirelessly to see Alaska’s Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945 passed, nearly 20 years before the United States passed its own civil rights legislation.
Members of the ANS are also responsible for organizing and fundraising to establish Juneau’s Filipino Community Hall, which also celebrates its 100th anniversary in October.
The women of the Alaska Native Sisterhood have worked to advance conversations and action on issues...

- Description
- Yngvil Vatn Guttu doesn’t just make music. She makes music happen. Since the age of three, when she produced a note on a trumpet on her first try, Yngvil has been inexplicably attracted to the instrument. Little did she know just how much power it would exert over her. Nor just how much of that power she would impart to countless others through her music, communal spirit, and love of life. Before the sounds of this spirited musician-composer began bouncing around the echo chamber of New York City, where she currently spends much of her creative time, they were skimming the icy expanses of Norway. Born in Oslo, Yngvil grew up surrounded by classical music—Bach, Händel, and Schubert were among the first composers to inform her burgeoning mind. In fact, it was Maurice André’s definitive traversal of the Haydn trumpet concerto, along with the classic strains of Louis Armstrong that inspired the balance of note-for-note, classical exposition and soulful elaboration to which she alwa...

Eion Madden (pronounced "Owen") grew up in Ireland where he witnessed a drastic shift in the climate, from mild and rainy to one of extremes. He trained as a lawyer, serving firstly as a corporate attorney to an international diamond company, and then as a criminal prosecutor for the Irish State. In 2009, he traded in his career as a criminal lawyer to complete a post-graduate degree in climate change and moved to British Columbia. He came “straight off the boat” to work as a legal assistant at Ecojustice, Canada’s only national environmental law charity, where he tracked applications to Canadian regulatory bodies, before joining Wilderness Committee as their Climate Campaigner. For the last three years he has worked with British Columbians to stop harmful resource projects and move toward real action on climate change. His latest work is on...
